今日(28日) 、私は、姉Yと"仙巌園 (センガンエン)" 、

別名(愛称)、'磯庭園' (イソテイエン) へ行きました。

Today (28th), I and 

my sister Y 

visited "Sengan-en"; 

another name (nickname), Iso-teien : Iso Garden. 

(Iso means beach in Japanese)

仙巌園からの桜島

仙巌園 : ★ は、島津氏19代当主、薩摩藩の第2代藩主、

島津 光久 (シマズ ミツヒサ / 1616 - 1695) によって、

磯につくられた、美しい日本庭園のある別邸です。

このセクションは、庭の散策の後半部分についてです。

Sakurajima Island From Sengan-en

 "Sengan-en" is a villa with a beautiful Japanese garden 

built on the beach by Mitsuhisa Shimazu (1616 - 1695), 

the 19th head of the Shimazu clan and 

the 2nd lord of the Satsuma Domain.

This section is about the second part of the garden walk.

7) 猫神社へ / Towards Cat Shrine 

A. 御庭神社 / Oniwa Shrine

タクシーの運転手さんから、猫神社のことを聞きました。

猫の神社というのは、初めて聞き、珍しく思ったので、ぜひ、行きたいと思いました。

Oniwa Shrine

We heard about the cat shrine from a taxi driver.

This was the first time we had heard of a cat shrine, I thought it was unusual, so I definitely wanted to go.

赤い曼珠沙華
鹿児島入りしてから、私にとっては、
白や黄色の曼珠沙華が珍しく、撮影していました。
初めて、赤い曼珠沙華を撮影しました。
お庭に故意的に曼珠沙華があるのが珍しいと思いました。

Red Spider Lilies
After entering in Kagoshima, I had photographed 
the white or yellow spider lilies, which are rare for me.
For the first time, I photographed red spider lilies.
I thought it was unusual to have red spider lilies
 intentionally in the garden.

桜島〜〜〜！
Sakurajima~~!

こういう道が好きです。
I like this kind of path.

御庭神社
御庭神社には登り階段がありますが、
私達がここへ到着したときには、すでに、'上' でした。
猫神社かと思いましたが、御庭神社でした。

Oniwa Shrine
Oniwa Shrine has steps to climb, 
but we arrived from the side, already at the 'top''.
I thought it was the Cat Shrine, but it was Oniwa Shrine.

下記、仙巌園のサイトより

鶴丸城内や、仙巌園内外にあった13の神社を大正7年(1918)に合祀した神社。

According to Sengan-e's website,

"Thirteen shrines from the Shimadzu family residences were moved to Sengan-en in the late 19th century and collected together into a single shrine, said to be the luckiest at Sengan-en."

神聖かつ畏敬を感じる空気

例えこの小さな神社でも、その周りは、神聖かつ畏敬な

空気が感じられます。

自分が浄化されていくような気持ちになります。

Feeling Sacred and Awe-inspiring 

Even this small shrine has a sacred and awe-inspiring

 atmosphere around it.

I felt as if I was being purified.

はらはらと何かが降り注がれてくる

感じがします。

I feel like something flutters down 

and is permeating into me.

良い空気をありがとうございました。

Thank you for the good air.

階段をくだって、別のコースへ入ります。
Go down the steps and enter another route.

B. 再び水を追う / Again Following Water

保津川の水だと後になって気がつきました。

Later I realized that the water is
 from the Hozu River.

似たような写真になると思いつつも、撮影を止められません。

水が大好きな私！

I can't stop photographing even though I think they would be similar photographs.

I love water!

稲荷道・八幡道
標識に、"稲荷道・八幡道"とあります。
御庭神社は、13社が1つになっているので、

合祀される前のお社があるのでしょうか？

それとも、御庭神社へ続く別の参道 (裏参道)

なのでしょうか？
心惹かれる階段ですが、登らず、猫神社を目指します。

Inari-do・Hachiman-do

The sign says "Inari-do, Hachiman-do".

(do means road in Japanese)

Oniwa Shrine has 13 shrines, so were there any shrines 

here before they were enshrined together?

Or is it another approach (back approach) leading to Oniwa Shrine?

They are steps that attract my heart, 

but we were aiming for the Cat Shrine without climbing.

8) 猫神社と義弘 / Cat Shrine and Yoshihiro

猫神の由来

島津 義弘 (シマズ ヨシヒロ / 1535 - 1619) が戦場へ

猫を7匹連れてゆき、各部隊へ配属し、

猫の目の開き具合によって、時間を判断しました。

なるほど〜〜。

7匹のうち5匹が戦死したと伝えられています。

生き残った二匹の猫を祀ったのがこの猫神社です。

義弘は、6月10日を'時の記念日'にし、

毎年欠かさずここへ詣り、時計商組合員がここに

参集して祭典を行いました。

Origin of Cat God

Yoshihiro Shimazu (1535 - 1619) brought seven cats 

to the battlefield, assigned one to each unit, 

and judged the time of day 

by the degree of opening of the cat's eyes.

Indeed~d.

Five of the seven were reportedly killed in action.

This Cat Shrine enshrines the two cats that survived.

Yoshihiro made June 10 the 'Time Memorial Day' 

and visited the shrine without fail every year, where members of 

the watch dealers' association gathered and held a festival.

私は、猫神社をとおして、島津 義弘を知りました。

戦場に猫を連れてゆくなんて、なんてソフトなお方なのでしょうという第一印象を持ちました。

ですが、歴史上、彼は、’武勇の誉れ高く、戦国(安土桃山)時代でも屈指の猛将として当時から有名'だったそうです。

また、'島津四兄弟'が有名であることも、この旅のリサーチで知りましたが、そのうちの一人が、この義弘であることを今、知りました。

島津四兄弟:

義久 (ヨシヒサ / 1533 - 1611) : 島津氏第16代当主

義弘 (ヨシヒロ / 1535 - 1619) : 島津氏の第17代当主

歳久 (トシヒサ / 1537 - 1592) : 日置島津家の祖。

家久 (イエヒサ / 1547 - 1587) : 上記の兄達とは異母兄弟。処遇に差がありつつ、武芸に精進、戦でも結果を残し、部屋住みの身分を脱し、知行地4千石を得ています。

中興の祖と呼ばれる島津 忠良  (シマズタダヨシ / 1492 -1568) は、四人の孫を

「義久は三州の総大将たるの材徳自ら備わり、

義弘は雄武英略を以て他に傑出し、

歳久は始終の利害を察するの智計並びなく、

家久は軍法戦術に妙を得たり」

と評していました。

このほかにも、義弘には、家族思いの話、医術や茶の湯、学問にも秀でた才能を持つ文化人であった話、家来から慕われた話、などなど、いろいろな逸話があります。

お賽銭箱が本殿の半分くらいあるのが、ご愛嬌?

Main Shrine
The main shrine of the cat shrine is tiny.
It is just fun that the offertory box is
about half the size of the main shrine.

Cat Shrine and Yoshihiro

I got to know of Yoshihiro Shimazu through this Cat Shrine.

My first impression was how soft-hearted he was to bring cats to the battlefield.

However, historically, he is said to have been 'highly praised for his bravery and famous as one of the best generals in the Sengoku (Azuchi-Momoyama) period'.

Also, I found through research on this trip that the 'Shimazu Four Brothers' are famous, and I just learned that one of them is this Yoshihiro.

Four Shimazu brothers:

Yoshihisa (1533 - 1611): 16th head of the  Shimazu clan 

Yoshihiro (1535 - 1619): 17th head of the Shimazu clan

Toshihisa (1537 - 1592): Founder of the Heki Shimazu family.

Iehisa (1547 - 1587) : Half-brother of the above brothers. Although there was a difference in treatment, he devoted himself to martial arts, achieved results in battle, got out of the status of living in his father's house, and obtained a fief of 4,000 koku.

Shimazu Tadayoshi (1492 - 1568), who is called the founder of the revitalization, wrote about his four grandchildren as follows: 

"Yoshihisa is a person of virtue by nature, having the character to rule as the supreme commander of the three provinces.

Yoshihiro has martial vigor and outstanding powers of reason. 

Toshihisa is unrivalled in his ability to grasp the big picture of a situation, discerning the inherent advantages and disadvantages, he is wise enough to perceive the interests from beginning to end.

Iehisa is skilled in the art of warfare, understanding military law and tactics."

In addition to this, there are various anecdotes about Yoshihiro, such as the story of his family, the story that he was a man of culture who excelled in medicine, tea ceremony, and academics, and the story that he was loved by his retainers. 

手水(チョウズ)なのでしょうか？
以前は使用されていたのかもしれません。

Was this a Chōzu?

私は猫を飼っていませんが、猫を飼っている友人へ
お守りを買いました。

I don't have a cat, but I bought amulets for friends who have cats.

見上げれば、空と木々と..
 If I look up, I can see the sky, the trees, and...

散策を終了し、薩摩切子のお店、'反射炉跡' へ向かいました。

After finishing the walk, we headed to the Satsuma Kiriko shop and the Site of  Reverberatory Furnace.
