1) 下絵具と泥漿 / Slip and Slurry
私は、泥漿に顔料 (ガンリョウ) を混ぜて下絵具を作るのだと理解しています。
少なくとも私はそのようにして下絵具を作っています。
日本では、しばしば泥漿は、型作り(鋳込み) を意味しますが、この場合はそれではありません。
私は、泥漿も下絵具も通常はスリップ (Slip) と呼んでいます。
スリップ (下絵具) は、好きな手法で、ずっと作品に取り入れています。
下絵具は、素焼前に施す場合と素焼後に施す場合があります。
私は前者を用いますが、日本でも英国でも後者が一般的です。
自分のやり方が英国では一般的だと思っていましたが、それは少数派であると、最近知りました。
私が素焼前にスリップを用いるのは、スリップの色 (顔料) が私の透明釉に混じってほしくないからです。
素焼前の方が素地への馴染みが良いようにも感じます。
色にしても素地への馴染にしても、私が作ったスリップ (下絵具) の場合はということかもしれません。
ですが、機会があれば、素焼後に下絵の具を施すことも試してみたいと思います。
Slip and Slurry
I understand that the slurry is mixed with a Pigment (Ganryo) to make Slip or a slip paint : Shitaenogu in Japanese.
At least I make slip paint that way.
In Japan, Deishou often means moulding (casting), but not in this case.
Actually, I usually call both Deishou and Shitaenogu, Slip in Japanese.
Slip (Shitaenogu) is my favourite technique and I have used it in my work.
Slip can be applied before or after biscuit firing.
I use slip before, but the latter is common in both Japan and Britain.
I had thought my method was common in Britain, but my method is in a minority and I recently knew about it.
I use slip before biscuit firing because I don't want the slip colour to mix with my transparent glaze.
I also feel that it adheres better to the porcelain clay.
Whether it's the colour or the adhesion with the clay, it may be the case with my own slip.
However, if I have a chance, I would like to try applying the slip paint after biscuit firing.
2) 磁器土のスリップ / Porcelain Slip
下の写真のスリップ (泥漿) には、色は混ぜていません。
日本では、粘土の接着の役割をする 'ドベ' があり、それと私のこのスリップはよく似ている、もしくは同じものかもしれません。
私は、形を形成した素地の磁器土とは違う磁器土を下絵具として使用します。
本焼後、かすかな色の違い、例えば、白色と生成り色 (白に近い) 程度の差になります。
よくよく見ないとその違いはわからないかもしれません。
これは本帰国後に、日本と英国の磁器土の色の違いがあること、国産の磁器土も産地または会社によって違いがあることを知って得たアイディアです。
磁器土が大好きで、その素地を見せたいという思いもあります。

Porcelain Slip
The slip in the photograph above is not mixed with colour.
In Japan, there is a 'Dobe' that acts as an adhesive for clay, and my slip may be very similar or the same.
To paint, I use porcelain clay that is different from the porcelain clay that formed the shape.
After glaze firing, a slight colour difference, for example, there is a difference between white and ecru (close to white).
You may not notice the difference unless you look closely and carefully.
This is an idea that I got after returning to Japan, knowing that there are differences in the colors of Japanese and British porcelain clays, and that domestic porcelain clays also differ depending on the production area or company.
I love porcelain clay and I also want to show the base material.
