私と夫Rは、2019年8月、コッツウォルズ旅行をしました。
I and my husband R made a trip to the Cotswolds in August 2019.

シャアボーン村 / Sherborne Village

シャアボーン村の説明 : ★が下のようにされていたので、ちらっとでも村を見ることができたらいいな〜と思っていました。

"観光ガイド本などで紹介されることの少ない「シャアボーン」は、村ごとナショナル・トラストによって保護管理されている。

石造りの家々、村で唯一の郵便局や小学校、そして広大なパークとエステイト。

既に観光地として有名になっている町や村と違い、本物のコッツウォルズの暮らしぶりを垣間見ることができる。"

シャアボーンという地名は、英国には二ヶ所あります。

グロスター州シャアボーン村 /  Sherborneとドーセット州 シャアボーン/ Sherborne町(マーケット・タウン)です。

双方の地名の説明に、ドゥームズデイ・ブック / Domesday Book (1086)の記述が用いられています。

シャアボーン村は、

"「明るい流れ/ bright stream」という意味の'Scireburne'に由来する"

とあり、

シャアボーン町は、

"「Sherborne」という地名は、「清流 / clear stream」という意味の 'scir burne' に由来する。"

とあります。

どちら説明からも、なんとなく、空気感や情景が想像できます。

シャアボーン村 は、その想像にほぼ近い印象でした。

下の地図にある "シャアボーン・ハウス / Sherborne House" と"聖メアリー・マグダレン教会 / St Mary Magdalene Church"には、その存在を知らず行きませんでした。

シャアボーン・ハウス は、イングリッシュ・ヘリテッジが管理し、イギリス指定建造物の2級に指定されています。

"聖メアリー・マグダレン教会" もイギリス指定建造物の2級に指定されています。

次回、機会があれば行きたいです。

村の中に入って行かず、村の端を車で通り抜けた程度でした。

Explanation of Sherborne Village : ★ (in Japanese), below, so I was hoping to see it even in a glance.

"Sherborne is rarely introduced in tourist guide books, is protected and managed by the National Trust in each village.

There are stone houses, the village's only post office and primary school, and vast parks and estates.

Unlike towns and villages that are already famous as tourist destinations, you can get a glimpse of the real life of the Cotswolds. "

There are two places in Britain named Sherborne ; 

Sherborne Village, Gloucestershire and Sherborne Town (market town), Dorset.

The descriptions in Domesday Book (1086) are used to explain both place names.

Sherborne village below,

"Derived from' Scire burne ', which means" bright stream "

Sherborne town below,

"The place name 'Sherborne' comes from 'scir burne', which means 'clear stream'. "

From either explanation, I can imagine the atmosphere and the scene.

The Sherborne village was almost exactly as I had imagined.

I didn't know the existence of "Sherborne House" and "St Mary Magdalene Church" on the map, above.

Sherborne House is managed by English Heritage and is designated as Grade II* listed building.

"St Mary Magdalene Church" is also designated as a Grade II* listed building.

Next time I want to go if I have the opportunity.

The impression is a peaceful countryside scene.

年月を重ねたコッツオルズ・ストーン
The Cotswolds Stone ages over the years.

1つの建物が2軒の家を兼ねているときに、英語では
セミ・ディタッチ・コテージィズ / semi-detached cottagesと言います。
日本では、'テラス・ハウス'と呼ぶように思います。

These are semi-detached cottages.

物干しや洗濯バサミがあります。
ここに白いシーツや洗濯物があっても、素敵な風景だなと思います。

There is a clothesline with clothespins.
Even if there are white sheets and laundry here, I think it's wonderful scenery.

一軒のカフェがあり、なかなか盛況に見えました。

There was one cafe, and it looked quite popular.

ナショナル・トラストが管理している "シャアボーン・パーク・エステート / Sherborne Park Estate" に向かいました。

We headed to the "Sherborne Park Estate" managed by the National Trust.
