絵本、『ちいさいおうち』（The Little House）は、1942年に文、絵ともに、

アメリカの絵本作家、ヴァージニア・リー・バートン (1909 - 1968) によって作られました。

日本では、岩波書店が、"岩波のこどもの本シリーズ" の一つとして、1981年に

『ちいさいおうち』[訳：石井 桃子(1907 -2008) ]を出版し、現在も出版され続けています。

A picture book, "The Little House" is a 1942 book written and illustrated 

by an  American, Virginia Lee Burton (1909 - 1968).

In Japan, Iwanami Shoten published "Chisai Ouchi "(The Little House) [Translated : Momoko Ishii (1907 - 2008)) in 1981 as one of "Series of Iwanami no kodo no Hon (Iwanami's Books for Children)" and the picture book is still in print.

夫のジョージもアリスティデス (Aristides Burton Demetrios)も、

アメリカの彫刻家です。

"They say that Virginia Lee Burton spent time alone at the sea-shack 
in her later years.

She walked to the sea-shack from her house every day and she looked at the sky and sea from the sea-shack which was important for her.

She did housework for her family as well as worked for textile 
and graphic design, it must be very busy and hard.

They guess she needed time when she could be herself in the sea-shack."

ケープ・アン(Cape Ann)のフォーリーコープへ引っ越します。

and moved from Cape Cod to a Folly Cove in Cape Ann, 1932

and her husband, George and their house'.

Cape Cod and Cape Ann are in Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA. 

They had sheep, grew vegetables and planted their favourite flowers 
in their garden.

They had lived in the nature like that in their life."

バートンの絵本は、絵本の王道という気がします。

なので、これからもずっと愛されてゆくように思います。

バートンのテキスタイルやグラフィックデザインの仕事を見ることができ、絵本への影響も感じられ、嬉しいことでした。

海辺の小屋は、トーベ・ヤンソン(1914 -2001) の小屋 (バルト海のクルーヴハル島)を思い起こしました。

とても楽しい展覧会でした。

I think the Burton's picture books are typical of main stream picture books.

So, I think that they will be loved by people or children forever.

I could see the work of Burton's textiles and graphic designs, and I felt the impact on her picture books, I was glad.

The small sea-shack beside the sea reminded me of Tove Janson (1914 - 2001)'s hut on Klovharu Island in the Baltic Sea.

It was a very enjoyable Exhibition.
