由布島の水牛車は、時刻が決まっていて、一斉に出発します。

| 西表島と由布島
由布島 (ユブジマ) は、八重山諸島の一島。
西表島に隣接 (距離約400m)し、その間の海は、
通常は大人の膝に満たないぐらいの深さしかなく、
満潮時でも1mほどにしかなりません。
Iriomote Island and Yubu Island
Yubu Island is one of the Yaeyama Islands.
The Island was made from sand which flowed out from Yonara River
in Iriomote Island and was deposited by ocean currents. The small island has a total area 12ha and 2.15 km in circumference .
Yubu Island is adjacent to Iriomote Island and about 400m apart.

由布島 / Yubu Island : ★
There are many tourists in the daytime, however,
there are almost no permanent residents.
(In 2010, population is 23, the number of households was 17
and Water Buffalo is 43)
In the their dialect "Yubu" means shoal and the Island name comes from this. |

Shallow Sea
Water Buffalo Carriage are used as transportation for tourists between the Islands,
and we also crossed over in a Water Buffalo Carriage.
When the tide level is low, you can cross over with regular cars or on foot.

竹富島でも水牛車に乗りましたが、そちらは陸で、一台ずつの出発でした。

私たちの水牛車 / Our Water Buffalo Carriage
御者は、三線 (サンシン)
を弾き、歌も歌ってくれます。
三線は沖縄特有の楽器です。 竹富島でも同様のサービスが見られましたが、 こちらの御者さんたちは楽なような気がします。 住宅街を縫うルートの竹富島とは違い、こちらは行程はまっすぐで、
一斉に海の中を進むので、
家々の壁や前後の水牛車や行き交う人々への気遣いがないからです。
The
driver plays a Sanshin and
sings a song.
Sanshin is an instrument unique to Okinawa.
A
similar service was also seen in Taketomi Island,
though
it seems easier for the drivers here.
Because
here the route is simpler than the one in Taketomi Island
which
goes weaving around residential area.
The route here is straight and travels through the sea in one go,
so
there is no concern for the walls of houses,
or buffalo carriages in front and behind, and pedestrians. |

| 鉢巻のような帯を水牛は頭にまいていて、その鉢巻には、 日の丸のマークらしきものが描かれていました。 御者さんのジョークなのか、何か他の気持ちがあるのかわかりませんが、 観光客の私としてはあまり好ましくは感じませんでした。 The water buffalo wears the band like Hachimaki which is a stylized headband (bandana) in Japanese culture, and the Hachimaki is designed like Hinomaru which is the national flag of Japan. I do not know it is the driver's joke or something else, anyway for me as a tourist, I did not like the idea.  |

| 由布島に並ぶ水牛車 ちょっと日本には思えない風景です。 時刻表はあって無きごとし? さすが、南国? もしくは、この時間はあまり西表島に戻る人が それほどいなかったのかもしれません。 Water Buffalo Carriages lining up on Yubu Island This is a scene that I do not think for a moment is in Japan.
