マンチェスターからの帰りに、シュロップシャー州シュルーズベリ 
(シュローズブリ) / Shrewsbury という街に3泊滞在しました。

 When we returned from Manchester, we visited Shrewsbury in Shropshire and stayed three nights.

本 (『修道士カドフェル シリーズ 』)ではシュルーズベリと表記されていますが、Shrewsbury の発音には、シュルーズベリと シュローズブリ2種類の発音があり、どちらも地元の方々は理解します。

 私は本にならって、シュルーズベリと書きます。

 シュルーズベリは、古い建物が立ち並び、セヴァーン川が街の周囲を巡っています。

英国で最大かつ、世界で最古 (ギネスブック入り) の
"フラワーショー/ Shrewsbury Flower Show"も、
'クオリー公園 / Quarry Park' で毎年8月半ばに開催されます。

 また、この街は、『種の起源』(1859) の著者で知られる、
チャールズ・ダーウィン (1809-12) の故郷でもあります。

29エーカー (117,363㎡ : 約東京ドーム2個半) の広さがあります。
There are 29 acres.

 There are many old buildings along the streets and the River Severn is the longest river in Britain which surrounds the town.

"Shrewsbury Flower Show" is the largest in Britain and the oldest in the world  (Guinness World Records) at 'Quarry Park' in mid-August every year.

 And also here was the birth place of Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882) well known as the author of "On the Origin of Species"(1859) .

いろいろな方面で観光地なのですが、私がこの街を訪れたのは『修道士カドフェル シリーズ 』(1977 - 1994) [エリス・ピーターズ (1913-1995) 作] の舞台であるからでした。

2) 修道士カドフェル / Brother Cadfael

『折れた竜骨』は2011年 '日本推理協会賞' を受賞しています。
This book got 'Mystery Writers of Japan Awards' in 2011.

『修道士カドフェル シリーズ 』を知ったのは、
『折れた竜骨』[米沢穂信 (1978 -) / 東京創元社 / 2011] 
のあとがきに、米沢 氏が『修道士カドフェル』シリーズに影響を受けて、
『折れた竜骨』を書いたとありました。

その後、私は第1巻『聖女の遺骨求む /A Morbid Taste for Bones』から読み始め、
おもしろさに惹かれてシリーズ全巻を読みました。

カドフェルの物語の時代は、英国の無政府時代 (1135 - 1154)です。

 カドフェルはシュルーズベリにあるシュルーズベリ大修道院 (ベネディクト会) の
修道士です。

彼は薬草園を管理し、修道院内では医者のような役割で、物語上は、探偵として
活躍します。

 『折れた竜骨』もカドフェルシリーズもどちらも私の好みの物語です(下記)。

Brother Cadfael 

I found out about the 'Brother Cadfael Series' in a postscript of 
"Oreta Ryukotsu : The Broken Keel" written in Japanese in which the author, 
Honobu Yonezawa (1978 -)  was inspired by the 'Brother Cadfael Series and he wrote this book.

Later I started reading the first of the 'Brother Cadfael Series' : "A Morbid Taste for Bones" and then I was attracted to the series and I read all the series.

The stories are set in the period known as the Anarchy (1135 - 1154). 

Cadfael is a monk in Shrewsbury Abbey (Benedict).

He looks after the herb garden and works as a doctor in the Abbey and acts as 
a detective in the stories.

"Oreta Ryukotsu : The Broken Keel" and  'Brother Cadfael Series' are my favourite books. (below)

3) 米沢穂信 / Honobu Yonezawa 

 『修道士カドフェル シリーズ 』を読むと、米沢穂信氏が影響されたということが、よくわかりました。

米沢氏の作品『氷菓』(2001、角川書店) の方が『折れた竜骨』よりも知名度があるらしく2012年にはTVアニメ化されました (下記)。

 『氷菓』も悪くはないけれど、私はファンタジー色がある『折れた竜骨』の方が
ずっと好きです。

米沢氏の『満願』(2014、新潮社)は、第27回 山本周五郎賞を受賞しました。

 『満願』はまだ読んでいませんが、来年には読めたらいいな〜と思いますが、読みたい本が現在山積み状態で、実現できるかどうか....。

 ちなみにカドフェルの方は、ドラマ化 (シーズン1〜4) されています:★

 After I read the 'Brother Cadfael Series', I understand Honobu Yonezawa ：★ was influenced by the the series.

Honobu's work,  "HYOUKA"(2001, Kadokawa Shoten) seemed to be more popular than "Oreta Ryukotsu : The Broken Keel", because it became 
a TV animation in 2012 (below).

"HYOUKA" is not bad for me, although I like the fantasy taste of  "The Broken Keel" much more. 

 His work, "Mangan" (2014, Shinchosha) was awarded 
"The 27th Yamamoto Shūgorō Prize".

 I haven't read  "Mangan" yet, hopefully I will read it next year, although I am not sure because now I have a mountain of books which I would read. 

 By the way the Cadfael series became a TV drama, series 1 in 1994 ~ series 4 in 1998 : ★

エリス・ピーターが彼女のマネージャーと一緒に
オランダ語の翻訳者、ピーター ・ジャンセンスと会っているところ。

 カドフェルの生みの親、 エリス・ピーターズ / Ellis Peters (1913 - 1995) については、以前のセクションで触れています (下記)。

 彼女はチェコ語の翻訳者で有名でもあり、そのときの名は
でした。

カドフェルの作者としては、ペンネームの
エリス・ピーターズ / Ellis Peters 
を用いていました。

今年はチェコ旅行をし、少しですが、チェコ語やチェコの歴史、文化に直接触れてきました(下記) 。

何故、イーディス・パージターがチェコ文化や言語に情熱を燃やしたのか、少しわかるような気がします。

チェコ語はとても難しい言語と言われていて、彼女がそれを理解することは、ミステリーの謎解きをする事と似ているように感じます。

また違う国で生きることや違う文化を理解する行為は、ウェールズ出身で十字軍の経験を持つカドフェルの中に見ることができます。

 シューズベリの地形は、チェコのチェスキー・クルムロフやプラハと似ています。

 エリス・ピーターズ は、似ている地形を選んだのでしょうか？

Ellis Peters

I wrote about Edith Mary Pargeter (1913 - 1995)  who was mother of the 'Brother Cadfael Series', in an earlier section.(below) 

She was well known as a translator between English and Czech, she used her name, Edith Mary Pargeter.

She used the nom de plume Ellis Peters as the author of the 'Brother Cadfael Series'.

This year, I had a Czech trip so I came a little in touch with Czech cultures.(below) 

 I feel I understand why she was interested in the Czech language and culture with such enthusiasm.

 They say Czech language is very difficult and I feel when she tried to understand it, 
it was similar to the solving of mysteries.

 And also a person who lives in a different country from their home town or the person tries to understand a different culture, I feel I can see these in Cadfael's way of living, he came from Wales and  had experience on Crusade. 

 The topography of Shrewsbury is like Český Krumlovs' and Pragues'.

 Did Edith Mary Pargeter select similar the topographys?
