シュルーズベリ鉄道 の高架橋
シュルーズベリ修道院がすぐ近く (写真左) なので、
それに合わせたデザインに感じます。

Viaduct of Shrewsbury Railway
I feel the design suits here which is very close to
Shrewsbury Abbey (on the left).

中心地のチェダースタイルよりも板材使いがシンプルになっています。
The buildings of tudor style use timbers more simply than 
the buildings in the centre.

一見同じ建物に見えますが、二つは違う建物です。
At first glance two buildings are the same, although they are different.

花壇が家に合ってます。
The flower beds suit the house.

おそるおそる中へ入ってみました。
I walked into there timidly.

レール跡のような？
They look like railway tracks?

鉄道のシグナルもある....
コレクターの家かしら？

There is a railway signal....
I wonder if the building is a collector's house?

ミニチュアのランドスケープガーデン
作業場のようなところにも、こんなガーデンを作るのは
さすが  'ガーデンキングダムの英国' と言うべきか、
最古のフラワーショーを開くシュルーズベリと言うべきか....

Even though it looks like a workshop, they make a garden like this,
I should say here is 'Garden Kingdom Britain' or
Shrewsbury has the oldest flower show in the world ...

B. 古い駅舎 / Old Station Building

道 (アビーフォア ゲート/ Abbey Forgate) に戻って、

少しすすむと駅舎風の建物がありました。

そこはシュルーズベリ修道院近くの駐車場脇でした。

I returned to a road : Abbey Foregate, went a little further and 

I found a building which looks like a station building.

再建築しているようです。

This is a reconstruction of the station, 
when Shrewsbury Railway used steam locomotives.
You can see their reconstructions and how the station was at that time.→★

シュルーズブリ鉄道遺産保護
建物の窓脇にこれを見つけました。

I found this in a corner of a window in the building.

駐車場
駅舎を見つける前の7日に撮影。
シュルーズベリ修道院近くの駐車場脇が
鉄道路線っぽい、プラットホームっぽい感じがしていました。
実際、そうだったのですね〜。

Car Park
Photographed on the 7th, before I found the old station.
I had felt that one side of a car park close to Shrewsbury Abbey,
 look like a railway or a platform.
It actually was.

The rails were buried in the ground by tarmac.

1) クルーズ前 / Before Cruising 

セヴァーン川のクルーズの発着地点がウェールズ橋なので、この日の後半は、
そちら方面に向かいました。

The cruises of the River Severn depart from the Welsh Bridge, so we walked there in the afternoon of the 8th.

ウェールズ橋 は町の北側、セヴァーン川を横切っています。

槍を思わせる彫像
ウェールズとの戦いを感じさせます。
1282年ウェールズはイングランドの支配下にようやく入りますが、
その後も民族意識を失わず現在に至っています。
スコットランドも似たような感じですね。

The statue reminds me of spears
I feel the fighting with Wales.
In 1282, finally Wales became under control by England,
although the Welsh have not lost Wales Nationality to today.
I feel Scotland is similar.

あちらにもこちらにも古い建物があります。
マードル通りを降って 、ウェルッシュ橋に向かいます。

The old buildings are here and there.
We walked down Mardol and towards the Welsh Bridge.

2) モリスホール / Morris Hall

クルーズの後、シュルーズベリの東側を散策。

魅力的な外観の'モリスホール / Morris Hall'を見つけました。

結婚式などのイベント用の賃貸スペースの建物らしいです。

この日は何も行われていず、鍵は閉まっていましたので、周囲だけ撮影しました。


After cruising, we walked around the East side of Shrewsbury.

I found an attractive looking building, 'Morris Hall'.

It seems to lease space for events, for example, a wedding ceremony.

They did not have anything on the day, it was locked so I just photographed the outside.

 "旧 石の鐘 / Bellstone"
この家の近くで、昔の鐘の形に近い、丸い花崗岩 (下の写真) が
境界の目印になっていたのが見つかり、その名前になりました。

"Former Bellstone"
Originally it was called "Bellstone", because, the old 'Bell shaped' boundary stone had been found close to the house.

おとぎ話の世界でしょう？
This is a fairly tale world, isn't this?

3) 町壁 / Town Walls

シュルーズベリの南側を町壁 / Town Walls が未だに巡っています。
最初の町壁は1100年から1135年に築かれました。
1575年には、町壁は町をほぼ囲っていました。(上の地図)

The surviving Town Walls round the South of Shrewsbury.
The first town walls were built from 1100 to 1135.
In 1575, the walls almost circled the town. (See map above)

町壁の塔
1272年から1307年の間に建てられたと考えられています。
1930年にナショナルトラストの所有になりました。

They say 'Town Walls Tower' was built between 1272 and 1307.
The National Trust has owned this since 1930.

町壁の目的はウェールズからの攻撃に対しての防御でした。

The main purpose was to defend against attacks from the Welsh.

町壁通りのシュルーズベリ大聖堂
どうしても、カドフェルのことがあるので、
シュルーズベリ修道院に意識が行ってしまいますが、
シュルーズベリには大聖堂もあるのです。

All my attention had been focused on Shrewsbury Abbey,
though the city has a Cathedral, too.

町壁の外では、ローンボウルズが行われていました。

People played Bowls outside the walls.

倉庫に使用されているのでしょうか？
可愛すぎる！

Too pretty!

町壁通りには、こんなモダンなテラスハウスが建てられてもいます。

There are modern terraced houses on the town walls.

1) 城塞跡 / Ruin of Fortress

'シュルーズベリ城 / Shrewsbury Castle' は、お城のイメージをもって訪ねると
がっかりするかもしれません。

シュルーズベリ城は、お城というよりも城塞または城塞跡という感じです。

現在、メインの建物には
"シュロプシャー連隊博物館" / "Shropshire Regimental Museum"
が入っています(有料)。公式サイト: ★

私はカドフェルがらみでここを訪れたので、博物館には入りませんでした。

『修道士カドフェル シリーズ 』の
第2巻『死体が多すぎる』/ "One Corpse Too Many" 
[1979 , エリス・ピーター (1913 - 1995)]で、
このお城は主要な場所になっています。

Ruin of Fortress

When you have an image of a castle and you visit 'Shrewsbury Castle', you might be depressed.

'Shrewsbury Castle' looks like a fortress or the ruin of a fortress.

Nowadays their main building has the "Shropshire Regimental Museum" with fee.

I visited here, because of Cadfael, so I did not enter the main building.

The Castle is a significant place in the Cadfael Chronicles, 
Part 2 "One Corpse Too Many"
[1979 , Ellis Peters (1913 - 1995)].

８は、ほぼ城の入り口です。グレイの帯がセヴァーン川

城の向かいは図書館
Across from the castle is Shrewsbury Library 

ダーウィンの彫像
図書館前にダーウィン (1809 - 1882) の彫像があります。

現在、シューズベリはカドフェルよりもダーウィンが有名になっているようです。

カドフェルの博物館と違って、
ダーウィンの彫像は取り除かれることはないでしょう。

Statue of Darwin
There is a statue of Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882) in front of the library.
Nowadays Darwin seems to be more well known than Cadfael.
This statue will never be taken away, unlike Cadfael's Museum.

3) 場内へ / Into Castle 

ゲート前には花と大砲
 Flowers and Cannons in front of the Gate

『死体が多すぎる』の中で、スティーブン王 (1092~6頃 -1154 / 在位1135 -1154) 
の敵方モー ド (1102 - 1167) についた94名を首吊りにして、
この城壁から晒すのです。

『修道士カドフェル シリーズ 』のなかでこれが一番多い殺人です。

カドフェルが問題にするのは95番目の犠牲者だけです...。
戦争の犠牲者は名探偵でも助けることはできないし、
犯人追求もできませんからね。

In "One Corpse Too Many", King Stephen (c.1092~6 -1154 / reign 1135 - 1154) executed 94 people who stood with his enemy,
 Empress Matilda (1102 - 1167), they were hung from this castle wall 
disgracing them in public.

In the Cadfael Chronicles, this is the most biggest number of homicides.
However, there was a 95th body which Cadfael could not ignore.

The victims of wars cannot be helped, even great detectives 

cannot pursue their killers, can they?

カドフェルの時代には、この城壁は存在しないので、

 エリス・ピーターの想像か

(物語と事実を混同するのは私も含め読者の常ですね）、

この城壁の場所にもっとシンプルな形の壁があったのではないかと推測します。

In fact, this wall was not here in Cadfael's time,

so I guess that the story was in the imagination of Ellis Peters,

 (as always readers including me,  mix up stories and facts), 

or maybe there was a more simple type of wall.

4) モット アンド ベーリー / Motte-and-bailey

丘の上に何かがある！ / Something is on the hill top!
丘と思ったところは、地図で'MOTTE'と呼ばれる、
古いお城(跡)：モット アンド ベーリー  "/ "Motte-and-bailey"なのでした。
城内で最も古い部分 (1150 - 89築) のようです。

When I thought a hill, actually they call it  a 'MOTTE' on the map
from "Motte-and-bailey" : the old castle (Ruin).
Here seems to be the oldest part of the castle (built in 1150 - 89) .

白い'キツネの手袋' 
'キツネの手袋'は、ジギタリスの通称。
別称はたくさんあり、
猛毒があり、暗がりに繁殖しやすかったりしているところから、
ミステリアスなイメージが強いようで、
ファンタジー系の別称がたくさんあります。
ゴブリン手袋、魔女の手袋、死人のベル、妖精の手袋、
血まみれの指、妖精の帽子、妖精の指ぬき...

この花を初めて知ったのが英国文学の中で
う〜んおそらくファージョン(1881 - 1965) 作品だったと思うのですが、
その本には'キツネの手袋'と書かれていました。
それ以来、ずっと好印象です。
日本でも結構見ますが、私にとっては英国を感じる花です。

White 'Foxgloves' 
'Foxgloves' is a common name of Digitalis.
It has deadly poison and often grows in dark places so that it seems to have
 a mysterious image and has many fantasy type names : below
Goblin Gloves, Witches' Gloves, Dead Men's Bells, Fairy's Glove,
Bloody Fingers, Fairy Caps,  Fairy Thimbles...

I first came across this flower in British literature,
probably in a story by Eleanor Farjeon (1881 - 1965).
The story says 'Foxgloves', since then I have had a good impression.
Sometimes I see the flower in Japan, although I get a feeling, here is Britain.

I wanted to open, but it was locked.

1790年に見張り台として作られたと推測。
