1) Mちゃんから/ From My Friend M

昨年の、高校時代の友人Mちゃんから、プレゼントが届きました。

昨年の12月に、彼女へクリスマス・カードとほんの少しの英国土産を送ったお礼でした。

現在、彼女は、故郷の群馬県桐生市 (グンマケンキリュウシ) に住んでいます。

撮影をしていなかったことに気がつき、年を超えて撮影しました。

彼女とは、高校の同級生という関係だけでなく、彼女のお母様、

新井リコ先生 (1933~) が私のはじめてのデッサンの先生でした。

Mちゃんのお父様は世界的な有名なテキスタイル・プランナー、

新井 淳一 氏 (アライジュンイチ/ 1932 -2017) でした。

私が留学したバーススパ大学 (私は立体・陶芸科専攻) のテキスタイルのティム・パーティ先生 (Tim Parry-Williams / ?~ ) は、新井淳一氏に教えを乞うために、桐生に住んだことがありました。

学内でティムと会うと、新井氏の話やテキスタイルの話や雑談をしました。

私の留学時代は、けっこう心身ともに厳しかった中、学内でティムにあうとほっとしたことを覚えています。

 

2011年に新井氏が、英国王立美術大学 (ロイヤル・カレッジ・オヴ・アート / Royal College of Art) から名誉博士号授与されたときは、

ティムが新井氏の世話をしたとリコ先生から聞きました。

もちろん、Mちゃんとティムも面識があります。

ティムは、ノルウェイのベルゲン大学/ University of Bergenで教授になっていました。

新井淳一氏の作品？
"Jun-ichi Arai" のレベルがついています。
Mちゃんはこれを
 「小さい'ウールストール'」
と呼んでいます。
彼の作品(デザイン)のものを初めて持ちます。

M Chan calls this「Little 'Wool Stole'」.
This is the first time I've owned one of his designs.

表も裏も水玉柄ですが、表情が違います。
面白いですね。

From My Friend M

I received a present from my high school friend M Chan last year.

It was a Thank You for sending her a Christmas card and a small British souvenir last December.

She currently lives in her (our) hometown of Kiryū City, Gunma Prefecture.

I realized that I hadn't taken a photograph, so I took photographs after the end of the year.

Not only were we high school classmates, but her mother,

Arai Riko Sensei (1933 ~) ：★, was my first drawing teacher.

M Chan's father was the world-famous textile planner, Arai Junichi (1932 - 2017).

Tim Parry-Williams, a textile teacher at Bath Spa University (where I studied abroad, majoring in 3D and ceramics), had lived in Kiryu to learn from Arai Junichi.

When I met Tim on campus, We talked about Arai, textiles and others.

During my time studying abroad, my life was physically and mentally tough, but I remember feeling relieved when I met Tim on campus.

I heard from Riko Sensei that Tim looked after Arai when Arai was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art, London in 2011.

Of course, M Chan and Tim also knew each other.

We opened a bottle of sparkling wine with gold leaf in it.

これは、夫Rが英国人で、英国では、1月なかばくらいまで、
クリスマス・ディスプレイをしていることによります。
この写真には、年賀状 (右下) が写っています。

New Year and Christmas

In our house, we keep our Christmas displays up

 until around mid-January.

This is because my husband, R, is British, and in the UK,

 they keep their Christmas displays up until early January.

This photograph shows New Year's cards (bottom right).

私の人生で初めて購入した、おせち料理のフルセットです。

JALのマイレージポイントで購入しました。

豪華です！
12月30日に届いた時は、冷凍されていました。
説明書に従って解凍しました。
上手に解凍できました。

I defrosted it according to the instructions.

Online Ordering

This is the first full set of New Year's Meal : Osechi-ryōri  I've ever purchased in my life.

I bought it with my JAL mileage points.

According Wiki about Osechi, 

"Osechi-ryōri (御節料理, お節料理 or おせち) are traditional Japanese New Year foods. 

Osechi are easily recognizable by their special boxes called jūbako (重箱), which resemble bentō boxes."

O-toso: New Year Sake
We drank the sake : O-toso we received
as a Christmas present from H&TJ couple.

According to Wiki Otoso, 

"Toso (屠蘇), or o-toso, is spiced medicinal sake traditionally drunk during Japanese New Year celebrations."

下の写真は、1月2日に撮影しました。

3人の食卓
母、R、私で迎えた食事です。
お雑煮は自分で作りました。
毎年、Sさんから、美味しい黒豆をいただきます。
それもお皿に盛っています。

Meal For Three

This is the meal for my mother, R, and me.

I made the Ozōni myself.

Every year, S gives me some delicious black beans.

I also served them on our own plates.

重箱からお料理を各自の皿に盛り付けました。

 I arranged the food from the O-sechi box : jūbako 

onto our own plates.

According to Wiki about zōni,

"Zōni (雑煮 or ぞうに), often with the honorific "o-" as o-zōni, 

is a Japanese soup containing mochi rice cakes.

 The dish is strongly associated with the Japanese New Year and its tradition of osechi ceremonial foods. 

The preparation of zōni varies both by household and region."

2) ポインセチア / Poinsettia

ポインセチア
何年か前にNファミリーからいただきました。
そのときは、ピンク色でしたが、現在は、
先祖返りをしてオリジナルの色に戻っています。
珍しいピンク色は、いただいた翌年からなくなってしまいました。
ですが、枯れずに毎年花をつけてくれることが嬉しいです。

Poinsettia

We were given this by the N family several years ago.

At the time, it was pink, but it has now reverted to its original colour.

The rare pink colour disappeared the year after we received it.

But I'm happy that it hasn't withered and 

continues to bloom every year.

水引飾り

今回の水引飾り(注連飾りの代用？）は、友人Oより、

クリスマス・プレゼントとしてもらいました。
どうもありがとう！

 (instead of  Shimenawa-kazari?) was given to me

 as a Christmas present from my friend O.

2) 松飾 / Pine Decoration 

以前、松飾をどこに飾るかと検索したときに、

'門松は年神を家に迎え入れるための依り代という意味で、

神様に自分のいる場所 (家) を見つけやすい場所に飾る'

と聞いていました。

なので、今まで、道路に面した場所 (屋根がない場所) に飾っていましたが、コンクリートの壁で飾りにくく、また、左右対称になりづらいので、今回から玄関前に飾りました。

飾った時は知りませんでしたが、その後、検索したら、

'玄関前、向かって左側に黒松 (雄松) を、右側に赤松 (雌松) という

2種の松を左右一対で飾るのが一般的である'

と知りました。

今まで何度も飾ってきたのに、知りませんでした！

松飾はcoopさんで購入しましたが、黒松と赤松のセットになっているのでしょうか？

セットのようでした。

coopさん、ありがとうございます！

でも、私が無知だったので、今回は、黒松を右に、赤松を左に飾っていました。

左右一対で飾るのには、"陰陽和合 (インヨウワゴウ)" といった意味があり、"陰と陽・表と裏、ふたつが合わさってひとつ" という中国における物事全般の思想だそうです。

"陰陽和合" の思想もありつも、"陰陽不和" という思想もあり、この反対の思想がまた

"陰と陽" ですね。

世の中、なかなか、'カオス' だということですね(笑)。

松飾 
夫Rが飾ってくれました。
いつもは二人でしますが、今回は私にすることが
たくさんあったので、彼が一人でしてくれました。
ありがとう！

Pine Decoration 
My husband R decorated it.

Pine Decoration

Previously, when I searched for where to display pine decorations, 

I found out that 'Kadomatsu ; Pine Decoration is a place where the Gods of the year can easily find you (your house) because it is a place where you can welcome the Gods into your home'.

So, we used to display them in a place facing the road (no roof), but it's hard to display them on the concrete wall and it's hard to make them symmetrical, so this time he displayed them in front of the entrance.

We didn't know this when he had displayed them, but after searching, I found out that 'it's common to display two types of pine in a pair, a black pine (male pine) on the left side of the entrance and a red pine (female pine) on the right side'.

We have displayed it many times before, but we didn't know this!

We bought the pine decorations from 'coop', but do they come as 

a set of black pine and red pine?

They seem to be a set.

Thank you coop!

But I was ignorant, he had displayed the black pine on the right and the red pine on the left this time.

Displaying them in a pair on the left and right has the meaning of 

"Yin and Yang in Harmony : Inyo-wago", which is a general Chinese idea of ​​"yin and yang, front and back, two combined into one."

Although there is the idea of ​​"Yin and Yang in Harmony : Inyo-wago", there is also the idea of ​​"Disharmony Between Yin and Yang; Inyo-fuwago", and these opposing ideas are also part of "Yin and Yang".

This shows the world is quite 'chaotic' (Laugh).

赤松 (上) と黒松 (下)
葉先を触ると、「赤松」は痛くそれほどないが、「黒松」は、
かなり痛いというのが1つの見分け方だそうです。
ちょっと笑えます....。

奥田美紀(オクダミキ/ ?~)さんからの彼女のカレンダーが届きました。

実は、私は奥田美紀さんにお会いしたことがありません。

ですが、夫Rは、はじめて日本へ来た際に、私の神戸の友人Tさんを通して、彼女に会ったことがあります。

Tさんは、夙川 (シュクガワ/ 兵庫県西宮市) で、明石焼きのお店 - 

"貴味蛸 (キミタコ)" を経営しています。

私が神戸に住んでいた時から家族ぐるみでお付き合いしています。

"貴味蛸"の看板の絵を描かせていただいたり、年賀状を制作したりしていました。

今でも、その絵をロゴ扱いしてくださり、看板やお店の記念品などに使用していただいています。

ありがとうございます。

私がイラストレイターとして独り立ちをし、東京へ移った頃、年賀状制作をおろさせていただきました。

その年賀制作を引き継いでくださったのが、奥田美紀さんでした。

英国在住中の私が一時帰国をし、個展開催準備をしている間に、Rは関西旅行を一人でしました。

一人でと言っても、旅行中、私の友人達が彼の世話をし、Tさんも

その一人でした。

美紀さんは、英語が堪能なので、二人の通訳として、呼ばれたようでした。

その際は、Rがお世話になり、ありがとうございました。

それをきっかけとして、私が本帰国後、郵便を通してだけですが、

おつきあいを続けています。

奥田美紀さんのカレンダー
素敵なカレンダー、魅力的な絵です。
奥田美紀さんと漢字は違うけれど、同じ名前の
イラストレイターさんが複数いらっしゃるようです。

Miki Okuda's Calendar

A lovely calendar, with fascinating illustrations.

Although the Kanji are different, there seem to be

 several illustrators with the same name as Miki Okuda.

Calendar

I received a calendar from Miki Okuda (?~).

Actually, I have never met Miki Okuda.

However, my husband R met her through my friend T in Kobe when 

R first came to Japan.

T runs an Akashiyaki restaurant called "Kimitako" in Shukugawa, Nishinomiya City, Hyōgo Prefecture.

According to Wiki Akashiyaki,

"Akashiyaki (明石焼き) is a small round dumpling from the city of Akashi in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. "

I have known T's family since I lived in Kobe.

I drew the signboard of "Kimitako" and made their New Year's cards.

Even now, they still use the picture as their logo on their sign and restaurant commemorative items.

Thank you very much.

When I became independent as an illustrator and moved to Tokyo, 

I asked to stop producing New Year's cards.

It was Miki Okuda who took over the New Year's card production.

While I was living in the UK and returned to Japan temporarily to prepare for my exhibition, R went on a trip to Kansai by himself.

Although I say 'by himself', my friends looked after him during his trip, and T was one of them.

Miki is fluent in English, so she was called in to act as an interpreter for the two of them.

I would like to thank Miki for taking care of him on that occasion.

Since then, we have continued to keep in contact, albeit only through the mail, since I returned to Japan permanently.

2) おせち料理購入 

     Purchase New Year's Meal

今回のおせち料理は、すべて購入しました。

まるごろおせち料理を購入したのは、初めてでした。

年末年始、母が滞在して、私の負担が増えるので、自分の負担を減らすために、購入しました。

また、JALのマイレージポイントが、中途半端で貯まっていたので、それを使用する目的も、この購入ではたしました。

和洋おせち
箱を持つと、冷たい！
冷凍状態で届き、ちょっと驚きました。
随分前ですが、母がフランス料理のおせちをレストランに注文した際には、
常温で届いていました。
規模がちがうのでしょうし、時代も違いますからね。

Japanese and Western New Year Meal : Osechi

When I picked up the box, it was cold!

I was a little surprised to see that it arrived frozen.

A long time ago,  my mother ordered a French New Year's Meal : Osechi

 from a restaurant, it arrived at room temperature.

I guess the scale is different, and times are different too.

Purchase New Year's Meal

I purchased all of the New Year's Meal : Osechi this time.

According Wiki about Osechi,

Japanese New Year foods.

It was my first time purchasing an entire New Year's Meal : Osechi-ryōri.

My mother would be staying with me over the New Year holidays, which would increase my workload, so I purchased these to reduce my own burden.

I also had some JAL mileage points saved up, so this purchase fulfilled my purpose of using them.

母が一緒でなければ、決して注文しなかった、丸ごとのおせち料理です。

これを経験できること、母に感謝です。

This was a whole New Year's Meal, something I would never have ordered if my mother hadn't been there.

I'm grateful to my mother for giving me this experience.
