『"水の子どもたち(上・下)』
(チャールズ•キングスレイ、1819-1875)を読みました。
(チャールズ•キングスレイ、1819-1875)を読みました。
私達の夏の旅行計画にあるMalhamに、キングスレイは訪れ触発されて『水の子どもたち』を書きました(1863)。
映画化(The Water-babies,1978, part 1 →★)された、そのロケーション地はMalhamでなく、その南Denton Hall, llkeleyです。

この本は随分前に読んだと思ったのですが、物語を何も覚えていませんでした。
読み始めても心あたることがなく……
読んでいなかったのかな〜？
物語は煙突掃除少年トムが水の子に変わり、旅をする話です。
ファンタジー物語のさきがけと書かれている場合があります。
当時、教育も受けられないままに亡くなった子供達を、またはその魂を救うべく慰めるべく、作者が書いた作品のように感じられました。
("ピーターパン"もちょっと似た流れが感じられます)
作者は優しい気持ちをもって書いたのでしょう。
が、作中、作者が、大人に向け、社会に向け、批判している語りを
入れすぎていました。
その書き方には最後まで慣れませんでした。
それでも魅かれる部分もたくさんあり、私にとっては、薬と毒が混ぜこぜになっているような本です。
作中の補足がたくさん末尾につけられています。
その補足は楽しく読むことができました。
補足説明を読む方が楽しかったようにも思います。

因にキングスレイはデボン(Devon)の生まれです。
そういえばデボンにも有名なムアー(Exmoor)がありました。

The Water-Babies
Recently I have read "The Water-Babies" by Charles Kingsley (1819-1875).
He was inspired to write the book by Malham where we are going to visit this summer.
The book became a film (The Water-babies,1978, part 1 →★) and the location was Denton Hall, llkeley, south of Malham.

I think that I have read the book before, although I did not remember anything.
I started rereading the book, although I did not have any memory of the story.
I wonder if I really did read it?
The story is that a chimney sweep becomes a water baby or boy and he travels, looking for his boss when he was a chimney sweep.
Apparently the story was a forerunner of fantasy literature.
I feel that at that time, Kingsley would help and comfort the souls of the many children who died, who did not have any education, because they were very poor.
(I think it is similar to 'Never Never Land' in "Peter Pan".)
I guess Kingsley wrote it with his warm heart, however, the author wrote his comments and criticisms directly to adults or society in the story.
I found that these were too much for me and I did not get used to this style until the end, although I felt the story itself was sometimes interesting, so the book worked for me as medicine and poison.
The Japanese edition of this book has many notes after the story, added by Mr.Serizawa who is the translator of the book.
I feel that I enjoyed reading the notes much more than the story.

By the way, Kingsley was born in Devon, which reminds me of a famous moor: Exmoor.
