ボートン・オン・ザ・ウォーター / Bourton-on-the Water と

ビブリー / Bibury の間に、私達が "秘密の場所" / "Secret Place"と呼ぶ場所があります。('バイブリー'と日本語表記されるのですが発音は 'ビブリー'に近い)

私がまだ英国の学生だった頃に、Rと一緒に見つけました。

2008年にそこへ行ったのが最後でした。

Nファミリーを 私達の"秘密の場所" を見せたかったので、
ボートン・オン・ザ・ウォーター からビブリーに向かう途中で寄りました。

From Bourton-on-the Water to Bibury

A place which is between  Bourton-on-the Water and Bibury, we call  "Secret Place".

When I still was student in Britain, I found the place with R.

We last visited there in 2008.

We would show N family our "Secret Place" so we brought them on our way 
from Bourton-on-the Water to Bibury.

記憶が殆どなくなっていて、かなり迷いました。
私の記憶は、その場所だけで、そこまでの道筋はRに頼るしかありません。
村の名前や道の名前などが分かっていればいつものように
私もナビができるのですけれど...。
けれでも、その周辺すべてが結構良いので、どこを見ても素敵な風景。
たとえ目指す場所が見つけられなくても、
Nファミリーには満足していただけたのかもしれません。

Our memories had almost gone, so we quite lost our way.
My memory is just of the place and does not include any routes 
so I just depend on R.
If I knew the name of the villages and streets, I could be a navigator as usual...
However, all the surrounding is quite good and we looked at everywhere,
there are lovely views.
Even if we could not found the place, N family might be satisfied.

私達の"秘密の場所"
'ドワーフの小屋' (と勝手に呼んでいる) も健在で嬉しい。
手入れをし続けているオーナーさんに感謝！

Our Secret Place

I call 'Dwarf's Cottage' is still there, I am so glad!
The owner has looked after here, I say thank you very much!

2) ビブリー /  Bibury

"秘密の場所'あとにしてから、ビブリー にはすぐに到着しました。

After we left 'Secret Place', we arrived in Bibury quickly.

ビブリー
ビブリーを説明する時に、多くの場所で例にだされるのが
下のウィリアム・モリス / William Morris (1834 - 1896) の言葉です。
"英国で最も美しい村"
とても有名になっても、お土産屋さんやカフェが殆どありません。
モリスが感じたであろう美を維持しているところが素晴らしい。

Bibury
When people describe Bibury they often quote the comment
 of  William Morris (1834 - 1896) below
 "the most beautiful village in England"
There is very popular, although there are hardly any souvenir shops or cafes.
It is wonderful that there has kept the beauty which perhaps Morris felt.

右の建物はスワン ホテル : ★ / ★ (英語)
散策後、お茶をここで飲みました。ほっとしました〜！
夏なのに、寒かった！さすが英国の夏~!
私は、ここでお茶か軽くビールかワインを飲むのは好きです。
特に、この日は雨の中を歩き回ったので、いつもよりも疲れたのかもしれません。
ひ弱〜〜〜！
何回か、このホテルでお茶したことはありますが泊まったことがありません。
とても高くて、そのわりにはちょっと...という評判。
もちろん満足していらっしゃる方もいるようです。

On the right, there is Swan Hotel : ★ / ★
After walking, we had tea time in the hotel...I was relieved.
It was in Summer although it was cold! 
Indeed it was British Summer!
I do like to have a cup of tea or a glass of beer or wine here.
Especially as on the day, we walked around here in the rain 
so I might be more tired than usual. 
Wea~~k!
I have had a few tea times here so far, although I haven't stayed.
The hotel is very expensive for staying
and it does not match the cost.
Of course some people seem to be satisfied.

コルン川 と古い建物 : 'アーリントン ロウ' / 'Arlington Row'

写真の古い建物が、おそらく、ビブリーで最も有名でしょう。

あの建物に向かって歩いて行きました。

コルン川は、のちにテムズ川に合流します。

コッツオルズのコルン川はマス(ブラウン トラウト/ Brown Trout) の釣りで有名で、

ビブリーにもマスの養殖場と釣り場 : "Bubry Trout Farm" があります。

 The River Coln and the Old Building : 'Arlington Row'

Perhaps, the old buildings, Arlington Row' in the photograph 

is the most famous in Bibury.

We walked towards the buildings.

The River Coln flows into the River Thames.

The River Coln in Cotswolds is popular as a trout (Brown Trout) river.

In Bibury, there is a farm for fishing : "Biubry Trout Farm".

Bibury Cottage

 'アーリントン ロウ' / 'Arlington Row'
さきほど少し書きました、有名な 'アーリントン ロウ' です。
コッツウォルズストーン / ライムストーン (石灰岩) が用いられています。
これらのコテージは1380年に修道院の羊毛の倉庫として建てられました。
17世紀には織工さんたちの 住宅として改装され、
現在は個人住宅になっています。

 'Arlington Row'
I commented a little before about this old building, 'Arlington Row'.
They were made of Cotswolds stone : limestone.
These cottages were built in 1380 as a monastic wool store.
 They converted into weavers' cottages in the 17th century and 
nowadays they are private residences.

この家に沿って歩き、丘を登って、丘を一回りするようにして
駐車場に戻り、スワンホテルでお茶をしたのです。
雨降りではなかったら、ナショナル・トラストが管理する
”THE RACK ISLE”の湿地帯を歩くのはやめにしました。

この名前は、 昔、その一帯を羊毛をラックにかけて干したからです。

次回いらした時に、そして晴れの日に、ぜひ、”THE RACK ISLE”を

歩いてみていただきたいです。

We walked along the cottages, climbed and walked around a hill

and down to our carpark and then we had tea time in the Swan Hotel.

If it was not raining I would have walked and introduced them to ”THE RACK ISLE” 

which the National Trust looks after.

There was used to hang wool on racks hence the name's reason.

Next time when they come to Britain and it is fine,

I hope they walk along ”THERACK ISLE”.

1) N ファミリーの来訪 / N family Visit 


鎌倉の友人のNファミリーが英国の私達を訪ねてくれました。

Nファミリーにとって、初めての英国旅行、4泊5日の短い間でしたが、楽しく
過ごしてくださったようです。

コッツウォルズ  / Cotswolds に私達は彼らと一緒に行き、1泊しました。

Rの車は、子供用のトランク座席を使用すると、7人乗りが可能になり、4人家族である彼らと私達が一緒に乗れました。

ボートン・オン・ザ・ウォーター / Bourton-on-the Water、
ビブリー  / Bibury、
('バイブリー'と日本語表記されるのですが発音は 'ビブリー'に近い)
カースル・クーム / Castle Combe、
レイコック/ Lacock
という、コッツウォルズ で代表的な場所を回りました。

コッツウォルズ は、イングランド中央部に、およそ、横40km、縦145kmの丘陵地帯で、それは、ストラッド・アポン・エイボン / Stratford-upon-Avon の南部から
バース / Bathの南部になります。

また、特別自然美観地域  / Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty に指定されています。

コッツウォルズは、羊の丘という意味で、古い歴史を持ち、羊毛の交易で栄えていました(17世紀半ば)。

現在では、黄色みを帯び「蜂蜜色の石」「ライムストーン」と言われる
「コッツウォルズ  ストーン」
を使った建物群が有名になり、観光地になっています。

私は英国の学生時代をバースで過ごしましたので、コッツオルズは私達だけでも、また、日本からの友人達を連れて、独特のその風景を何度も楽しみました。

私とRでコッツウォルズを訪ねている間に見つけた、ガイドブックには載っていない、"秘密の場所"にも彼らを案内しました。

コッツウォルズの鴨 / Ducks in Cotswolds

N family Visit 

N Family, our friends visited us in Britain.

It was the first time they came to the country.

It was a short stay,  4nights 5days, although they looked as though they enjoyed Britain.

We stayed one the night in Cotswolds.

When we used the children seats of  R's car, the car can hold 7 people, so we and  
the four members of N Family got in the car together.

We visited typical villages below.
Bourton-on-the Water

Bibury
Castle Combe、
Lacock

Cotswolds is the rolling hills of England's central part, roughly 25 miles across and 90 miles long, stretching south-west from just south of Stratford-upon-Avon to just south of Bath. 

In addition, it is designated as the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Cotswolds means the Sheep Hill and prospered in the trade of wool in old history (the 17th Century).

Nowadays there are popular sightseeing spots and their main feature is building made of “Cotswolds Stone” which  is a yellow oolitic Jurassic limestone, said to be a "honey-coloured stone".

I spent student days in Bath, Britain, and I visited there many times with R, my friends and my family who came from Japan.

While I and R visited Cotswolds we found a 'Secret Place' which is not in guide books, and

we brought N family there this time. 

2) ボートン・オン・ザ・ウォーター 
    Bourton-on-the Water

Nファミリーが英国に到着した翌日に、ロンドンから ボートン・オン・ザ・ウォーターに向かいました。

私もRも久々のボートン・オン・ザ・ウォーター、前回は2008年の冬だったでしょうか？


The day after N family arrived in Britain, we went towards Bourton-on-the Water .

Did I and R visit there the last time in the Winter of 2008?

初めてコッツウォルズを訪れるときに一箇所だけというのなら、
私はここをおすすめします。

If it is your first visit to the Cotswolds and can only see one place,
I would recommend here.

雨の日になってしまいましたが、それはそれで美しい。
けれども、初めて訪ねるN家にとっては晴れの日の方が
楽しめたのでしょう。
でも雨であったことは、次回ぜひ晴れの日に来て!
というサインではないですか？

It was raining, but it is beautiful in its own right for me.
 N family could have enjoyed there first visit more if it is had been a sunny day.
However, was the rain a sigh which says 'Please come again when it is fine'?

鴨達、寒そう.... / The Ducks look cold...

雛の成長は違うのですね〜？
The duckling's growth is different, isn't it?

'リヴァー ・ウィンド ラッシュ' / 'River Windrush'

この川は、'リヴァー ・ウィンド ラッシュ' / 'River Windrush'、
テムズ川の上流になります。

コッツウォルズの丘に源泉があります (Taddington)。

川沿いの道がハイ・ストリート / Hight Streetで、

景色が良くて有名です。

'River Windrush'
This river is the River Windrush which later flows into the River Thames. 

The source is in the  Cotswold Hills.

The High Street along the River Windrush is picturesque and popular.

私はゲストを迎える時は、私の撮影の優先順位はゲストです。
N ファミリーでは、一家の大黒柱、Yさんがその役のようです。

彼らのプライベートのために、ブログには彼らの写真を殆ど載せませんので、
私の優先順位を感じないでしょう。

When I have guests. my first priority of my photograph is the guests.
In N family, the provider of the family, Y san seems to have the same role.

I hardly put any photographs of them in my blog for their privacy,
so you do not feel my priority.

巨大かたつむり
殆どの日本人のかたつむりのイメージは悪くないでしょうけれど、
大方の英国人は、嫌いでしょう。
ガーデンの天敵だからかな〜と、思います。
ここでは巨大かたつむりをあえて、庭先の壁上の立つ場所に設置しています。
魔除けならぬ人除け、観光客除けなのかもしれません。
もしくはジョーク？

Ginat Snail 
Most Japanese do not have a bad image of snails,
though most British hate them, don't they?
I think snails are natural enemies of their garden.
Here dares to set the giant snail on the wall of the garden.
Is it to ward off evil spirits?
 It might be to ward off tourists. Or it is Joke? 

歩道橋  /  Pedestrian Bridge 

川の中の石畳み
昔、馬車が通った名残です。

Stone Pavement in the River 
In former days carriages crossed the river beside this bridge. 

ここは、雨の日のせいか、静か...
けれども、第1候補のランチのお店に考えていたレストランは
ツアー客で満席のようでした。
結局、私たちのランチ(お腹の好き具合)は、お店のランチタイムに間に合わず
お店が閉まってしまいました。
第2候補のベーカリーへ行きました。

Here was quiet, perhaps because of the rain.
However, the first restaurant I thought me might visit
 seemed to be full of coach tourists,
although when we felt hungry, the lunch time was finished and they had closed.
Then we went to a 'Bakery on the Water', our second possibility.

晴れの日には黄色く見える壁が今日はこんな色です。
The walls look yellow in sunny days,
today is like this.

雨の日でも、私には十分美しく見えます。
いかがでしょう？

Even though it rains, it is very beautiful for me.
How do you feel?

時計
ある建物でマーケットが開かれていました。
そこで見つけた時計に"BOURTON ON THE WATER"の文字が入っていました。

A building had a market.
I found a clock which has the words "BOURTON ON THE WATER".

ランチ / Lunch 

Bakery on the Water : ★
前回、この村を訪れていた時に閉まっていたお店で、
入ってみたいな〜と思っていました。
今回、実現！Nファミリーのおかげです。

In an earlier visit it was closed and I still wanted to enter .
This time I made it, thank you to N family.

一人分が大きい！
サンドイッチは、パンの種類が選べて、中の具も選べます。
注文する時は大きさがわからなかったので、
それぞれ一人前ずつオーダーしてしまいました。
大食いの私とRは問題ありませんが少食のNファミリーには
多すぎましたね。
それでも、皆さん、がんばって食べてくれました。
配慮が行き届かなくてすみませんでした。

One Portion is Big!

We can select kinds of bread and ingredients for sandwiches.

When we ordered we did not know the size, we each ordered one portion.

I and R are gluttons, so the size is no problem,

although too big for all the members of N family who are light eaters.

However, they did their best.

I am sorry for the lack of my consideration.

雨が降っても長靴はいて川遊び
Even though it was raining, they are playing in the river in their boots.

雰囲気が変わった気がします。
洪水のせいでしょうか？ 私の気のせいでしょうか？

I feel the atmosphere is changed.
Perhaps it is by the flood or my imagination?
