Merton Abbey Mills

マートン・アビー・ミルズ /"Merton Abbey Mills"は、

ロンドン、マートン区にある中世の

マートン修道院 / Merton Prioryの跡地近くにあり、

以前はテキスタイル工場でしたが、現在はさまざまなお店が集まっています。

"Merton Abbey Mills" is a former textile factory in the parish of Merton in London,

near the site of the medieval Merton Priory, now there are a variety of shops.

マートン修道院

マートン修道院は、

12世紀初頭に建てられたアウグスティヌス (? -604)の修道院でした。
(聖アウグスティヌス修道会)

アウグスティヌスはベネディクト会の修道士で、596年に約40人の修道士とともに

イギリスへキリスト布教の為に派遣され、

カンタベリー大聖堂の最初の大司教になりました。

Merton Priory

Merton Abbey or Priory was
an Augustinian (Augustine of Canterbury / ? - 604) Abbey
built in the early 12th century. (Augustinian Canons)

Augustine was a Benedictine monk who was dispatched to Britain in 596

with about 40 monks to spread Christianity

and became the first bishop of Canterbury Cathedral.

イギリスで遺跡巡りをすると、非常によく出会うのですが、
ヘンリー8世 (1491 - 1547) が修道院を破壊、略奪した跡地です。

マートン修道院もその一つです。

When I visit ruins in Britain, I have seen often sites where Abbeys were destroyed and looted by Henry VIII (1491-1547).

Merton Abbey was one of them.

2) The Wheel House
A.200年前から / From 200 years ago

ワンドル川
ワンズワースに向かって北へ流れるワンドル川は、水車を稼働させ、
マートン区の多くの工業過程に水を供給しました。
のちに、テムズ川に流れて行きます。

River Wandle
The River Wandle flowing north towards Wandsworth drove watermills
and provided water for a number of industrial processes in Merton.

Later, it flows to the River Thames.

The Wheel House

The Wheel House (水車作業所)は、イングランド歴史的建造物の

グレードII指定建造物です。

The Wheel House is a Grade II listed building : ★ of Historic England.

200年前、ワンドル川には約100の水車作業所がありました。

マートン区には、ここと、Grove Mill Carshalton、The Snuff Mill、Ravensbury Mill

の4つのみが存在しています。

その中で、唯一、マートン・アビの水車のみが、完全に機能しています。
写真、右端に釣り人がいます。

200 years ago there were nearly 100 watermills on the River Wandle.

Only four still survive : Grove Mill Carshalton, The Snuff Mill

and Ravensbury Mill at Morden.

The wheel here at Merton Abbey Mills is the only one in full working order.
There is an angler on this side.

ヒストリック・イングランド（Historic England）、公式名称イングランド歴史的建造物・記念物委員会（Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England）は、 文化・メディア・スポーツ省（DCMS）が後援となっているイギリス政府の非政府部門公共機構である。

歴史的建造物やモニュメントをリストアップし、保存を行い、中央政府と地方自治体へ助言することでイングランドの歴史環境を保護することを仕事としている。

Brick and flint with random rubblestone blocks (reused stone); brick quoins.

B. 内部 / Inside

陶芸スタジオというよりは、陶芸のお店の印象が強かったです。

The impression of the pottery shop was stronger than of pottery studio.

車輪は動いています。
Wheels are working.

　古い道具も展示されています。
ちょっと投げやりな感じもしますが...。

Old tools are also on display.
I also feel a bit careless....

マートン・アビー・ミルズや水車作業所などについての
説明がパネル展示されています。
ですが、脇の方に追いやられていて邪魔者扱いされているような印象を
受けました。

About Merton Abbey Mills, Water Works and more

Explanations are displayed on the panels.

However, I received the impression that they are driven away

and treated as distractors.

イギリス留学初期に、ヴィクトリア・アンド・アルバート博物館で
引き出しの中にあったタイルを思い出しました。
私にとっては、かなり、英国の陶芸を感じさせるタイルです。

I remembered the tiles in drawers I had seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum

when I had just started studying in Britain,

For me, tiles give me an impression that this is quite British pottery.

見ていて飽きません。
I do not get tired of looking.

すぐそばに、今の水車に使用されている板が展示されて触ることもできます。
木材の密度が高く、見た目よりもずっしりと重いです。

The wooden planks now used in the water mill are displayed nearby
and we can touch them.

The density of wood is high and it is heavier than it looks.

魚がたくさんいるようです。
近くで複数の釣り人を見ました。

It seems that there are many fish.

I saw several anglers nearby.

この日、私は英国の家に来て初めて外出しました。

まずは、センターロンドンよりは近い、

"マートン・アビー・ミルズ" / "Merton Abbey Mills"に行きました。

Today, I went out for the first time after I came to our house in Britain.
I visited "Merton Abbey Mills" which

is nearer to our house than Central London.

マートン(区)は、私達が住む(私は滞在するというべき？) ウィンブルドンが含まれる区です。

"マートン・アビー・ミルズ" には、リバティのプリント工場があり、作品もいくつか展示してあると聞いていましたが、前日にRが下調べをし、実際には、プリント工場は過去のもので、作品展示もないことを知りました。

ですが、建物群が保存され、水車作業所 ("The Wheelhouse") が陶芸スタジオのようになっていると知り、出かけました。

Merton (Borough) is is a borough in south-west London in which we live (I should say
I stay?) in Wimbledon.

I heard that "Merton Abbey Mills" has Liberty's printing plant and has some works on display, but on the previous day, R made a preliminary survey, I knew that in fact, the printing plant is a thing of the past and there is no work exhibition.

However, I went to see it because it seems that the buildings are preserved and the working mill ("The Wheelhouse") is like a pottery studio.

12世紀初期の修道院(Abbey)跡地近くに、19世紀初頭、ワンドル川 / River Wandleを利用して、織物・染色工場地となりました。

1881年にウィリアム・モリス (1834 - 1896) が買い、1904年にリバティ社 (リバティプリント、リバティ百貨店：★) によって引き継がれました。

その後も他の会社によって織物生産は続けられました。

現在では、建物群は、飲食店などが入った商業施設になっており、地元の人々に利用されています。

The Long Shop

Pub Restaurant ; "Wandle Pirates" : ★

The site of the Abbey in the early 12th century became textile and dyeing factories by the early 19th Century using the River Wandle.

William Morris (1834-1896) purchased the site in 1881, and taken over by the Liberty & Co : ★ in 1904.

And then textile production was continued by other firms.

Nowadays, the buildings are commercial facilities including pub, restaurants and are used by locals.

The Apprentice Shop

ウィリアム・モリスのデザインを元にしたと思われる柄が建物に

用いられています。

The pattern is believed to be based on a design of William Morris

which is used on the building.

The Colour House

The Colour House (色の家)は、イングランド歴史的建造物の

グレードII指定建造物です。

The Colour House is a Grade II listed building : ★ of Historic England.
