Mode Museum

Marina Yee (1958 - )

Mode Museum
After the "Meyer van den Berg Museum", we went to "Mode Museum".
I researched about this trip and I knew Antwerp is said to be 'the City of Fashion'

In the 1980s, six fashion designers became known as the "Antwerp Six" who graduated from the "Royal Academy of Fine Arts", Antwerp.

 "Antwerp Six" :
Marina Yee (1958 - )
Dirk Bikkembergs (1962 -)
Dirk Van Saene (1962 -)
In addition to these,  Martin Margiela (brand ; Maison Margiela  / Former Maison Martin Margiela) (1957 -)  also seems to be a 'member'.

"In the field of 'Fashion Study', the 'Royal Academy of Fine Arts' is one of the world famous 'big three'." (from Japanese Wiki ; translation by myself )

My friend, Hakko Chan learned jewelry design at the "Royal Academy of Fine Arts".

Eventually we found the "Mode Museum", we entered the building, but we only reached the reception counter, because the Museum was closed for construction.

Disappointing!
Mode Museum's Official Website :

We wondered what to do next and headed for the "Plantin-Moretus Museum".

 Leaflet
The leaflet explains that you look at the map (below),
if you go round the highlights, it is one hour,
if you visit extensively, it is two hours.

Satisfying Museum
The building is well preserved, we can feel the atmosphere of that time. (Short Film : )

I particularly recommend here for people with graphics-related work and those interested in graphics.

If you are in a hurry, you might regret your haste, because you go around more than 30 rooms, a lot of exhibits can be seen.

It is also a World Heritage Site.

For me, their printing related machines, tools, printed books and maps were very interesting and I enjoyed both the building and the garden.

This museum was really fun ~!

Unfortunately, since I do not use flash for photographs, many of my photographs do not have focus, so I could not use them for my blog.

Ground Floor

It is the closest to the entrance, although it is the last in the suggested tour order.

The decoration of the chair seems to be two Sphinxes

It is decoration that gives the clock opinions.

The old clock is romantic.

Is it because the clock expresses the time
and shows celestial bodies (the universe) as well?

History
Christophe Plantin (1520 -1589) became a large publisher in the 16th century and his studio : "Officina Plantiniana" began as a printing company.

After his death, his brother - in - law Jan Moretus (1543 -1610) and his descendants took over and their publishing continued for nine generations.

In 1876, Edoart Moretus (? -?) sold the studio and the printing equipment to Antwerp City, and the following year, the studio and residential part were opened to the public.

I often saw compass decoration.

Compass are used for the Museum's mark, aren't they?
博物館のサイト()より;

Compasses
Their website () says the motto of the business of the Plantin Family is 'Labore et Constantia (‘Through work and constancy’)', which is represented by compasses.

The compasses have a fixed arm (constant) and a working arm.

Indeed.....

Compass was used as a trademark of the company.

"On the left, the Greek hero Hercules symbolises work,

Constantia is a goddess of Rome, anthropomorphizing "constant".
Also, there is an asteroid, Constantia discovered in 1891,
named from the Latin ; Constantia meaning "Constant".

As an aside, an asteroid was discovered by German astronomer Karl Wilhelm Reinmuth (1892 -1979) which was named : Plantin (6808 Plantin) after Christophe Plantin.

Antwerp Trip - Museum Mayer van den Bergh, 6th of September, 2017

 Museum Mayer van den Bergh

Museum Mayer van den Bergh
"Museum Mayer van den Bergh" is close to 'Rubenshuis' and tickets also have a combination ticket.
Official Website :

Since I planned to go to this museum from the beginning, we bought the tickets when we bought tickets for 'Rubenshuis' house.
About  'Rubenshuis', below

An aristocrat, Fritz-Meyer van den Bergh (1858 - 1901) spent most of his life in collecting art, a Neo-Gothic (Gothic Revival) style mansion was built by his mother, Henriette Maier (1838 - 1920) after his death, and in 1904 the museum opened.

I feel that a museum exhibiting 'individual collection' in a person's mansion has a unique mood, a different-dimension world atmosphere, and it is interesting.

This is true for this museum.

I heard that my friend, Hakko Chan who studied in Antwerp, visited here many times and now I understand her feeling.

When we visited, there were not too many people, so I could immerse myself in the different world.
Entrance

When a private home is an art museum, it can be hard to find because it is integrated with the surrounding buildings.

Even the "Rubenshuis" appeared easy to pass by without their promotion and here looks more like a private house.

Between First Room and Second Room

Here somehow, I felt the mother's sorrow for her son who had passed away
and the affection of the mother who still thinks of her son.

 Room 4
"SIX ANGELS FROM A CALVARY SCENE", c1460-70
Brant (? -?)

I do like this display.
The angel sculptures are flying around the altarpiece, the idea seeming to be close to 3D animation.
Originally the six angels, made of oak, were at St. Nicholas Hospital in Enghien. In 1899 Fritz Meyer bought them from an antique dealer in Brussels.

Basically I am attracted by 'Angels' and I like solids.

 Room 5
HOVERING DEMON

There was fun in the display where
the demon (above) and the angel (below) are contrasted.
The expression of the devil's tongue is impressive.
Also, the cover of the Museum's Exhibition Booklet is the 'Devil Boy'.

Both are 'Putti'.

Between the two 'Putti' (above),  "Dulle Griet" (1562)
by Pieter Bruegel( Father / 1525 - 1569) is displayed.
I feel the arrangement and the spacing here is interesting.

"Twelve Proverbs", 1588 :
Oil Paint on Wooden Plates
By Pieter Bruegel

This reminded me of 'Karuta'.
('Karuta' are Japanese playing cards.)
Actually these are proverbs and their pictures,
so Karuta and this picture are similar.

Fireplaces
This was originally part of a mantelpiece.

I also wrote in the 'Rubenshuissection of my love of fireplaces,
accessories and tiles around.

Delft Tiles

The mantelpiece is a castle? .... It is the first time I saw this decoration.

Grand Fireplace
By having several fireplaces, everyone can tell the wealth of the house.

My Favourite

 Explanation of Manuscript
I also like manuscripts.
In my view, the old handwritten letters have soul or spirit,
and sometimes the contents seem to spring up as images.

The keys to open the doors that leads to different spaces or other worlds.

I like keys .... I found out that my favourite style of key is used
for "Pin Tumbler Locks".
I like this type of key more than padlock type keys.

I like the stairs and the passageway. I also like bridges.
May be there is an attraction to spaces of connections between spaces, or worlds.

Feeling Feminine

He collected such accessories, too.

Mrs. Pot
This pot reminds me of the Disney character,  Mrs. Pot,
in 'Beauty and the Beast' (animation film, 1991).

Celling and Table

Oh! Yes! Belgium is famous for lace making.

They call it 'Bobbin Lace'.

Room 10
CHRIST-ST JOHN ENSEMBLE, c.1280 -90(?) :
By Master Heinrich Konstanz (? -?)

They say 'St. John was a disciple loved by Christ',
I can see this from this statue.
I felt this was unusual view.
They look like a couple rather than a God and a disciple.

Master Heinrich von Konstanz was a sculptor active around 1300 in the
Lake Constance area in Germany .

I had a good impression of "Museum Mayer van den Bergh".

I would go to the Museum again.
