Helsinki Trip - the Surroundings of Helsinki Central Railway Station , 25th of July, 2017

Contents
Helsinki Central Railway Station
Western Side
East of the Station
South Side

Helsinki Central Railway Station

Helsinki Central Railway Station (Front)

The station is mostly clad in Finnish granite.
It opened in 1860, the present building was completed in 1919
and was designed by Eliel Saarinen (1873 -1950).
The two pairs of statues each hold the lamps.
Do they remind only me of Sphinxes?

The clock tower is 48.5m high.

West Side
We came to Helsinki Central Railway Station on a train
from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport the day before.
We went out from the west side, although it was not this gorgeous entrance,
our platform led straight onto a public road.

From the train, as we went towards our accommodation,
a lot of the scenery had granite tinged with pink,
in natural forms, blended into part of everyday life.

Street-level Stores
They sell many kind of berries.

Markets are popular here, so I think even the shops make atmosphere as markets.

Huge Cherries

Western Side

The Finland Hall, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, National Museum Finland and many other cultural facilities are on the western side.

I will show you photographs of our visiting of some cultural facilities in each section later.

And also our accommodation was this side too, so automatically I took more photographs of this side of town.

Statue of Mannerheim, 'Finland's Founding Father'

Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (1867 -1951) lead the approach to independence from Russia.

He was the 6th President of Finland.

I remembered that I read a book, "Finland - myth and reality"
[Max Jakobson (1923 -2013) /  Otava Pub. Co.,/ 1987] a long long time ago.

I read the book because I became interested in Finland when 'International Institute for Children's Literature, Osaka Prefecture'(closed 2009) was still running, there was 'Moomin Seminar' and I joined it.

I do not remember the detail about the book, although I still remember now that I learned
'You (or we, or I) should live flexiblly for important things.'
from the book.
I do not know anything about the work.

The cables for trams are over here and there.

Spårakoff

Pub Tram  :
Spårakoff
The Pub Tram (Spårakoff) runs in the city, 40~ 50 minutes
just in the summer season (the middle of May to the end of August).
We did not get on the tram, although I think this idea is lovely.

(Sinebrychoff Brewery)

"KOFF" is the brand name used by Sinebrychoff Brewery.
Just after the 175th anniversary of the Brewery in 1994,
the Pub Tram started operating.
Today, the ticket is 9 Euro and drinks are extra,
the tram is the only one in the world, just in Helsinki!

East Side

Finnish National Theatre

(Photographs from Ateneum Art Museum, 28th of July)
This looks like a building in an imaginary picture-book world...

 "Big Beers - Small Breweries"

While I photographed for 'Finnish National Theatre',
I realized there was a Beer Festival in the Railway Square.
It tempted me, however, we still had other plans, so gave up.
Later I found out the festival was called "Big Beers - Small Breweries 2017",
the Beer festival focusing on local beers produced in small breweries.

South Side

Mikokatu Street
I felt Scandinavia design, even for a street performance.
I could not listen to their music, that's too bad.

'marimekko' of Mikokatu Street
In thinking of design in Finland we cannot ignore 'marimekko', can  we?
There are many 'marimekko' shops in Helsinki,
although I felt this shop's appearance was the most 'marimekko'.
Oh! Yes! It looks more 'marimekko' than the main shop.
However, I heard that the service from the shop assistants
in the main shop is the best.
I visited the main shop and looked around, although I did not buy anything,
so I do not know about the assistants.
I would buy something of 'marimekko' in their home town,
although in the end I just bought  'marimekko' paper napkins
in a supermarket (laugh).
The detail about 'marimekko' in a section of 'marimekko' Exhibition in Tokyo, below.

Helsinki Trip - Wooden Church : "Kampin Chapel", 25th of July, 2017

Contents
The Exterior and the Surroundings
Inside
Generosity
Other Churches

The Exterior and the Surroundings

Kimmo Lintula

What is this!?
This is a "Wooden Church" : "Kampin Chapel".

It was designed by 'K2S Architects Ltd.' ;
Kimmo Lintula, Niko Sirola and Mikko Summanen (1971 ~).
The height is 11,5 m and it is made of three different types of wood.

It stands in a corner of the 'Narinkkatori Square' (
below photograph
which is in front of Kampin Shopping centre.

Narinkkatori Square
The square is close to the Helsinki Central Railway Station and is bustling.

 Statue in the Square
Many places in Helsinki have modern statues and statues of heroes or heroines.

Inside

Wooden Chapel's Interior Plan
There are some staff in the lobby.
The sign board says something like :
"if you want to have any advice and talk, here is a room".

I saw some people who looked like homeless in the back.
I thought they deliberately built this chapel in this environment.

Silence
The cross on the altar is simple and the silence inside together made me surprised.
I understand here is a chapel, so there are just the essentials to pray to God.
I am not Christian but I felt that this space asks me
"What is a truly important for you?"

The lines horizontally and vertically are smooth.

Celling
I had a feeling that I am in a spaceship, after then I saw the altar again,
I felt a weird feeling that we will be carried to somewhere.

"The chapel is jointly run by the Lutheran congregations of Helsinki and the City of Helsinki's Department of Social Services and Health Care."
(This from the Leaflet)
I was quite impressed that the religion and the
administration manage together.

Generosity

The Leaflets in English and Japanese
I was surprised they have it in Japanese.
We went to The "Rock Church" ("Temppeliaukio Church") before this chapel,
it does not have any explanation in Japanese.

According to the Leaflet,
"Employees of the church and the Department of Social Services
and Health Care are on hand in the lobby of the chapel during opening hours.
You can talk to them if you feel you need help any day of the year,
regardless of where you are from.
There is no need to make an appointment and all conversations are anonymous."

They do not ask our identification, we do not have to become its members,

no password,does not matter nationality...
What an open attitude!
I feel helpers's generosity.
They are radiant for me who is narrow mind...

Here, entry is free and the leaflets are free, too.

I took photographs with their permission and leaflets, so I would donate a little.

However, I did not have any Euro coins.

I thought I would ask the staff
'I do not have any Euro coins, could I donate a Pound coin and where do I drop?'

When I was asking the staff 'I do not have any Euro coin', at that stage the staff said
’You will go there' and pointed to the room which the sign shows is for advice and then I realized I made some kind of misunderstanding.

(Oh! No! No! No!).... I do not mean that, just I would donate a little by using a Pound coin.

At the end, the staff pointed to the donation box and I dropped the coin.

The box is in unity with the surrounding design, so it was difficult for me to find.

I felt many things here : welfare, religion, how to approach people, and the significance of Scandinavian design.

Other Churches

I would visit the Myyrnaki Church, it is known as the 'Light Church', and also visit Otaniemi Chapel  which they say is the church which gave inspiration to Tadao Ando (1941 ~) when he designed the 'Chapel of Water' in Hokkaido, Japan.

However, the Myyrnaki Church and Otaniemi Chapel are not in Helsinki, so I could not make them.

If I have a next time, I would really visit them.

And also I would visit the 'Chapel of Water'.

Helsinki Trip - Rock Church, 25th of July, 2017

Rock Church : "Temppeliaukio Church (Temppeliaukion kirkko)" is called "Rock Church" as its nickname, it is a tourist must-see spot in Helsinki.

We were lucky, it is close to our accommodation and we could walk to the Church.

On that day, we left our apartment, 14:00 and it was a late start so we decided not to use tram, bus and train for sightseeing and we just wandered on foot.

After 'Lunch Cafe Mizu' in previous section of my blog, we walked here.

We climb up the steps of a blind alley and could see the back of 'Rock Church'.

Back of 'Rock Church'
I could not imagine the inside at all from the outside.

We climb a little.

The rock church is surrounded by a residential quarter.

The Church's Roof.

From above to Entrance Area

Entrance
It looks like a fortress entrance rather than a church's.

Inside

Completion in 1969
I knew the inside from a guide book, however, I was still surprised.

The church is in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland.

Design by Brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen.
The size is one quarter of the original plan, although it is big enough!

The roof is lined with copper tape.

Sometimes music plays here.
We did not listen to the music,

although they played the piano around 12:00 on the day.

When they made the church,
the rocks were broken by dynamite.

The drill lines for the dynamite remain in the rocks.
I felt that Japanese cannot have the idea of blasting out
the rock in a town for a church by dynamite.
(Even though Japanese have the technique and skill.)

Font of Rock

The road leads straight up to the front of the church.

"Kamppi Chapel"

After the Rock Church, we went towards the "Wooden Church" ; "Kamppi Chapel".
