英国橋
朝食前に、最初に英国橋を見に行き、セヴァーン川沿いを散歩しました。
 English Bridge
First of all we looked at the English Bridge and
walked along the River  Severn before breakfast.

　川沿いの遊歩道に降りて行きます。
こちらは南側。

Path Down to promenade along the River.
This is the South side.

微笑ましい白鳥の家族
Heartwarming Swan Family

魚のモンスター
橋のデコレーションに魚のモンスターと思われるモティーフを使用しています。
氾濫を何度となくしている セヴァーン川にかかる石橋、
そのモティーフを使用する気持ちがなんとなくわかる気がします。
現在の橋は1926年に再建されたものです。

Fish Monster
The decoration of the Bridge uses a motif of 'Fish Monster'.
The Stone Bridge is built over the Severn River which has overflowed a few times.
Somehow I understand why they used the motif.
The present Bridge was built in 1926.

シュルーズブリがセヴァーン川にすっぽり囲まれているのがよくわかります。
この川とともにこの街があるのですね。

We understand clearly that Shrewsbury is surrounded by the River Severn.
The town lives together with the River. 
They have a website about bridges. →★

魅力的な家だな〜と思って撮影。
あとで、聖ジュリアン修道士会 / St.Julian's Friars の建物(★)だと知りました。
もとは1240年頃にフランシスコ会の建物として建てられましたが、
1538年には小家 (コテージ) に改築されました。
カドフェルも修道士ですが宗派 (修道会) が違うのです。

I felt this was attractive building and photographed.
Later I found out that it is 'St.Julian's Friars': ★
Originally it was built in about1240 and was for Franciscan friars,
although it was convented into cottages in 1538.
Cadfael is one of friars, although their religious orders are different.

相変わらず、白い花、それもセリ 科の花を撮影して
Rに笑われます。

As always, I photograph white flowers as well as Apiaceae,
R laughs.

これはセリ 科ではありません。なんの木の花でしょう？

This is not Apiaceae. Flowers of which tree?

歩道橋も風景にあっていて素敵です。

The foot bridge suits the view, lovely.

パブ/ Pub

オベリスク
ウィリアム ジェームス クレメント (1802 -1870) 記念碑が川のそばにあります。
彼は英国で最初の外科医でシューズベリ市長 (1861-62) にもなっています。
英国は戦争関係の碑が極端に多く私には感じられ、多少うんざり....
でもこれは違うのでした。

Obelisk
In Memory of William James Clement (1802 -1870) is close to the River.
He was the first surgeon in Britain and was a Mayor of Shrewsbury (1861-62).
For me, there are too many memorial somethings for Wars in Britain, 
so I am a little disgusted...But this is not.

オオバンの仲間かカモメの方か？
ボナパルトカモメ？(基本的に日本にはいない鳥)

Is this Eurasian Coot or Gull?
 Bonaparte's Gull？(Usually the bird is not in Japan)

白い花以外も撮るのですよ〜！
I photograph flowers which are not white, too~!

でもセリ科は決して忘れない！
But I never forget Apiaceae!

英国橋の下の遊歩道を通る
The promenade continues under the English Bridge.

橋に戻る階段はありますが、ここでは登らず素通り。
水尺 (スイシャク) がついています。

There were steps to the Bridge, although we did not walk up.
There is a 'flood measuring stick'.

シュルーズベリ修道院が見えます。

North of the Bridge
I can see Shrewsbury Abbey.

ここで初めてこの陶芸作品に会いました。
その後複数回、街の違う場所でこのタイプの作品を目にしたのです。

Here was the first time I saw this type of ceramics work.
Later I saw a few others at different places in the town.

このような景色を見ると水の中に、この世とは違う世界があると信じられます。
When I see a view like this, 
I can believe in a different world in the water from this world.

鴨のカップル？ / A Couple of Ducks?

川沿いを離れる道を見つける
I found the path leading away from the River.

'聖マリーの水の小道'....なるほどね〜。
The name is this...indeed.

赤いレンガと薔薇の組み合わせは英国らしい。
The combination of red bricks and roses is very British.

振り返って一枚撮影。
To look turn and photograph once. 

中世の頃とあまりかわらない景色なのかもしれません。
This view might not have changed so much from the Middle Ages.

2) 7日昼間 / 7th in Daytime

シュルーズベリ修道院へ行く途中で英国橋からセヴァーン川を眺めます。

I looked at the River Severn when I walked to Shrewsbury Abbey.

白鳥の家族をまた見つけました。
I found the Swan Family again.

3) 7月8日 / 8th of July

ウェルッシュ橋からセヴァーン川に沿って南へ歩きます。

I walked along the River Severn from the Welsh Bridge to the south.

パブ / Pub

ポートヒル 吊り橋
1923年に作られ、2012年に大規模な修復がされました。
私たちはこの橋を渡らず、川沿いを歩き続けました。

 Porthill Suspension Bridge
The 'Porthill Suspension Bridge' was built in 1923 and
in 2012 they had a big refurbishment.
We did not cross here, but carried on along side the River.

オールド マーケット ホール

シュルーズベリは中世以来のマーケットタウンです。

ホールの前は広場で、いつくかの出店が出ています。

Old Market Hall

Shrewsbury has been a market town since the Middle Ages. 

The square is in front of the old hall and there are a few market stalls.

オールド マーケット ホールの裏側にあります。
この建物の中に案内所があります。

The Music Hall : ★
This is other side 'the Old Town Hall'.
The Information Centre is in this building.

パレード ショッピング センター ：★
(セント メアリーズ プレイス通り)
1830年に病院として建った建物です。
早朝の散歩で前を通りましたが、まだオープン前でした。

Parade Shopping Centre : ★
(St.Marys Place)
This was built in 1830 as a hospital.
When we walked in the early morning, we just passed the buildings
and they had not yet opened. 

町には15世紀から16世紀の木造建築を含め、660以上もの歴史的な建物があると言われているだけあり、どこを歩いても古くて素敵な建物が現れます。

そこにイマドキのお店、カフェ、パブ、レストランなどが入っています。

They say that in the town there are over 600 historic buildings including wooden buildings of the 15th and 16th Centuries.

The buildings have modern shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants.

The name : 'Milk Street' is cute, isn't it?

ワイル コープ 通り /  Wyle Cop

チューダースタイル (1485 -1603) の多くの建物は

ハーフティンバー様式の木造建築です。
カドフェルの時代 (12世紀初期) にはまだなかった建物です。
この手の建物を見ると英国らしさを私は感じます。
でもちょっと装飾過多かな？

Many Tudor style (1485 -1603) wooden buildings are half timbered.
Cadfael's time (the early 12th Century) did not have these.

When I see the style I feel this is Britain.
But these are a little overly decorative？

向こうに見える建物がカドフェルの時代に近いのかもしれません...
The small buildings might be as they were close to Cadfael's time....

フィッシュ ストリート
カドフェルの時代の建物らしい気がします。

I feel this is Cadfael's time.



熊の階段
上の写真の建物の中にある階段です。
'熊の階段 / Bear Steps' と呼ばれているとのちになって知りました。
現在では、熊の階段の名前は、この階段だけでなく、
この周辺の住所の名前やギャラリーの名前 (Bear Steps Gallery) などにも
なっています。ギャラリーはこの建物の中らしい....

Bear Steps
These steps are in the building in the two photographs above.
Later I knew it is called 'Bear Steps'.
Nowadays the name of 'Bear Steps' not only means these steps but also the address of the area around and a gallery : 'Bear Steps Gallery'.
The Gallery seems to be in the building.

聖オークモンズ広場

階段を上ると'聖オークモンズ教会/ St. Alkmund's Church'前に出て来ます。

After the Steps, were in front of St. Alkmund's Church'.

この場所がカドフェル小冊子裏表紙の絵になっていました。

石畳で丘

街は丘を含んでいるので、移動するときに登ったり、降りたりします。
カドフェルの時代は石畳はなく、泥道だったはずです。


Stone Pavement, Hill as Well
The town includes hills, when we move, we walked up and down.
There were not stone pavements in Cadfael's time, 
there would have been a muddy track.

プライド ヒル通りでのパフォーマンス
プライド ヒル通りは、車行禁止
中世時代には、'プライド ヒル' は
'コルビザーズ ロウ' / 'Corvisor's Row' と呼ばれていました。

Performance on Pride Hill 
Cars are not allowed on Pride Hill. 
The hill was called 'Corvisor's Row' in medieval times.

プライド ヒル通りいつ頃の建物なのでしょう？

午後8時すぎになり、人通りは少なくなります。
キッズの出番です！
英国の午後8時はまだまだ明るい。

After 8:00pm, there is quiet.
So this is when the Kids come out!
It will be light until much later.
