Last Visit to Yamanashi Print Studio
英国から、本帰国後、私は鎌倉市に住み、山梨版画工房で、リトグラフ作品を制作をしてきました。
英国では陶芸を学びましたが、その傍で、陶芸制作を補助する版画制作も少ししていました。
私の大学の陶芸科(正しくは立体科)の方針で、大学に設備がある、版画、木工などを陶芸の他に制作することが奨励されていました。
その方針は、陶芸一筋になると、1つのアイディアに固執してしまうので、アイディアの幅を広げるために、ほかの創作技法を学ばせるめであると私は理解していました。
それは良いことだと私は思っていたので、日本でもその制作のあり方は、続けたいと思っていました。
山梨版画工房を知り、通うことにしたのです。
山梨版画工房は、リトグラフ版画専門でした。
私の工房への通い方は、基本、2年に1度開催する個展にあわせたものでした。
それは、個展開催の1年余り前から、約半年間、週に1度、版画工房へ通いました。
時には週に2度、3度行きました。
ほとんどの場合は、先生とマンツーマンでした。
最初は、 山梨先生に刷っていただいていましたが、最後には自分で刷れるようになりました。
それでも、刷っている時に問題が起きれば、先生に助けていただき、先生を頼る姿勢はさいごまで続きました。
先生にとっては、私の未熟さも、通い方も、快いものではなかったかもしれませんが、忍耐強く世話をしていただき、感謝しております。
工房で、未熟な私はいろいろ学びましたし、素敵な工房の方々と知り合えたことも良い点でした。
山梨版画工房は、私にとっては、とても素晴らしい創作現場でした。
今月で、先生高齢を理由に工房を閉じることになり、この日、ご挨拶に伺いました。
先生、本当に、ありがとうございました。
お身体大切にお過ごしください。
私は、山梨版画工房にかわる版画工房を探さなくてはなりません。
まあ、私はラッキーなので、どこか、よいところが見つかると思います。
きっとそこは、山梨版画工房よりも、'これからの私' に適した工房であると信じています。

Last Visit To Yamanashi Print Studio
After returning to Japan from Britain, I have lived in Kamakura and produced lithograph works in the Yamanashi Print Studio.
I studied ceramics in Britain, but also did some printmaking to supplement my ceramic work.
The policy of the Ceramics Department (actually the 3D Department) at my university was to encourage students to create prints, woodwork, and other art for which the university had facilities, in addition to ceramics.
I have understood that the reason for this was that if students focused solely on ceramics, we would end up getting stuck on one idea, so the purpose was to have us learn other creative techniques in order to broaden the range of our ideas.
I thought that was a good thing, so I wanted to continue this way of creating in Japan.
I found out about the Yamanashi Printmaking Studio and decided to attend.
The Studio specialised in lithograph prints.
My attendance at the studio was timed to coincide with my exhibitions, which basically are held every two years.
I began going to the printmaking studio once a week for about six months, starting a little over a year before the exhibition.
Sometimes I went twice or three times in a week.
In most cases, it was one-on-one with Y Sensei.
At first, Sensei printed my prints for me, but eventually I was able to print them myself.
Even so, if a problem arose while printing, Sensei would help me, and I continued to rely on him until the very end.
My immaturity and the way I attended to the studio may not have been pleasant for Sensei, but I am grateful for his patient care.
For me, the Yamanashi Printmaking Studio was a wonderful place of creation.
Due to his advanced age, the studio will be closing this month, so I visited him on this day to say goodbye and thank you.

I need to find a printmaking studio to replace Yamanashi Printmaking Studio.
Well, I'm lucky, so I think I'll find a good place somewhere.
I'm sure it will be more suitable for 'my future self' than Yamanashi Printmaking Studio.
