鎖付図書 (クサリツキトショ) / chained library をご存知ですか？
私はヘレフォード大聖堂 / Hereford Cathedral : ★を訪ねて、初めて知りました。
ヘレフォード大聖堂は、ヘレフォードシャー / Herefordshireの州都、
ヘレフォード / Hereford にあります。
ここでの目的は、ヘレフォード図 / Hereford Mappa Mundi でした。

大聖堂内のヘレフォード図の展示会場を抜けると、鎖付図書: ★があります。
鎖付図書は、本が本棚と鎖で繋がれている図書館のことで、本を指すのではありません。
英語では、Chained Library : 鎖付図書館と表現されるので、本と混同することはありませんが、日本語に訳されると鎖付図書となってわかりづらくなりますね。
本(図書)の場合は、鎖つき本 : Chaining of Book : Chained Book になります。
中世ヨーロッパでは本 (写本)の数が少なく貴重でしたので、本に鎖をつけて、外部に持ち出せなくしました。
盗難防止ですね。

Do you know a chained library?
I visited Hereford Cathedral : ★ and first knew about it.
The Hereford Cathedral is in Hereford which is the county city of Herefordshire.
My purpose here was to see the Hereford Mappa Mundi.
Go through Hereford Mappa Mundi exhibition hall inside the Cathedral and you will find a Chained Library : ★.
In medieval Europe, the number of books (manuscripts) was small and precious, so books are attached to their bookcase by a chain so that they could not be taken outside.
A chained library is a library where the books are attached to their bookcase by a chain, which is sufficiently long to allow the books to be taken from their shelves and read, but not removed from the library itself.

It ’s anti-theft.
It was a commonly used system in European libraries from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
(There are some theories about time)
However, this method was also expensive and was not used on all books, so the more valuable books in a collection ; reference books and large books.

After Hereford Mappa Mundi exhibition,
there is Chained Library : ★.
 鎖つき本と本棚が再現され、展示されています。 Replica Chaining of Book and a bookshelf are reproduced and displayed. 
実際の鎖付図書館ではこの位置にはこの本棚に収納されている本のリストが
書かれていますが、ここでは鎖付き図書の構造が説明されています。
In the actual Chained Library, on each of the bookcases is a list of books
enabling readers to find books on that shelf,
though here the structure of a chained book is described.

Chained Library of Hereford Cathedral
本は、本の背 (タイトル側)ではなく、小口 (コグチ)の方が読者の方を向いて棚に置かれています。
読み手にとっては親切ではありませんが、これにより、向きを変えることなく本を持ち上げて開くことができるため、チェーンが絡まることがなくなります。
各本の表紙の一端にチェーンが取り付けられています。
もう一方の端は、各棚の底に沿って走るロッド(棒)にスロットが付いています。
(私はこう、書いていてもよく理解していません...)
このシステムでは、本を棚から取り出して机で読むことができますが、本棚から本を取り出すことはできません。

"新しい建物に設計された部屋の特色は、図書館全体が、1611年から1841年の元の配置になっていることであり、かつ、現代の保存標準基準に沿って、本を管理できることです。"
各本の表紙の一端にチェーンが取り付けられています。
もう一方の端は、各棚の底に沿って走るロッド(棒)にスロットが付いています。
(私はこう、書いていてもよく理解していません...)
このシステムでは、本を棚から取り出して机で読むことができますが、本棚から本を取り出すことはできません。

私たちがこの図書館にいることは、大きな保存ケースに入っているということですね....すごいことです！
今思うと、それは、ヘレフォード図展示室も同様であったと思います。
両方、耐火にもなっています。

Chained Library of Hereford Cathedral
Hereford Cathedral’s 17th-century Chained Library is the largest to survive
with all its chains, rods and locks intact.

The books are shelved with their foredges ; 'Foredge shelving' rather than their spines, facing the reader.
It's not kind to the reader, though it allows you to lift and open the book without having to turn around, so the chain doesn't get tangled.
A chain is attached at one end to the front cover of each book; the other end is slotted on to a rod running along the bottom of each shelf.
The system allows a book to be taken from the shelf and read at the desk, but not to be removed from the bookcase.
According to their website,
"The specially designed chamber in the New Library Building not only means that the whole library can now be seen in its original arrangement as it was from 1611 to 1841, but also allows the books to be kept in controlled environmental conditions according to modern standards of presentation."
We are in this library means that we are in a big preservation case ... it is great!
Now, I think it was the same for the Hereford Mappa Mundi display room.
Both are also fire resistant.

通常Rの写真は載せないのですが、 Rなしの本棚の写真が全てあまりに焦点がなく この写真を使います。

鍛冶屋さんの作品
石工(大工も？)は彼らの手がけた作品に自分の印を刻みます。
ここには人の顔が向き合った形の蝶番があります。
他にも、いくつか柄が違う、組み合わせが違うものを見ました。
鍛冶屋さんの印でしょうか？
それとも彼の遊び心でしょうか？
これを発見してスタッフのに伝えたら、スタッフは知りませんでした。
伝えたあと、彼女が喜んだので私も嬉しかったです。
Blacksmith Work
Masons (and carpenters?) engrave their own marks on their works.
Here are the hinges that face each other.
In addition, I saw some different designs and different combinations.
Are they blacksmith's marks?
Or his playfulness?
When I discovered these and told the staff, the staff did not know.
After telling, she looked happy, so I was happy, too.

The cathedral’s earliest and most important book is
the 8th-century Hereford Gospels. A book of Aesop's Fables in Latin, often used as a textbook, here for choir children,
printed in Strasbourg as was "Commentary on the Comedies of Terence",
mentioned in above photograph. [Terence (BC195~185 – BC 159)]

鎖付図書には、227の写本と1400冊の印刷された本が含まれています。

神学、哲学、法律、歴史、天文学、数学の本が揃っています。

燭台 / Candlestick

この不完全な形は、
ロバート・シップスター [Robert Shipster (1775 - 1823) / エングレービング師]
の挿絵 (下の絵) を元にした、
元は日本の5円玉のように明るい色ではなかったかと思います。
1684年頃の教区の食堂の勘定書きには、牧師聖歌隊 (Vicars Choral) が
所持していたことが記録されています。
This fragment is all that remains of the decorative brass candlestick sconce seen
on Robert Shipster (1775 - 1823 / Engraver)'s illustration, below.
I think the original was a bright colour like a Japanese ¥5 coin.
It is recorded in the accounts of the College's buttery (C.1684)
as having belonged to the Vicars Choral.

ルミエール？
”美女と野獣" [1991/ アニメーション映画] の
キャラクター：ルミエール；燭台付きの蝋燭の姿(下の画像)を思い出します。
遠い昔の発想と現代の発想が似ていることが面白く感じます。
Lumière？
It reminds me of the Character : Lumière
in "Beauty and the Beast"[1991/ Animation Film].
He is in the shape of a candlestick with candles, see below.
I find it interesting when the ideas of the distant past and modern are similar.

5) マンドルラ / Mandorla

マンドルラ
マンドルラは、アーモンド型の光背 (コウハイ)、
アーモンド型は、通常、中世の聖職者の封印に使用され、
普通の人の封印は、大抵が円形です。
Mandorla
a frame surrounds the totality of an iconographic figure.
The almond-shape is the shape generally used for mediaeval ecclesiastical seals,
secular seals generally being round.

マンドルラ / Mandorlaを撮影した時は、この名前を知りませんでした。
ですが、展示(下の写真)によって、これがスタンプ(印鑑)の1つであることは察することはできました。
私はスタンプが好き、古いものには一層、興味が湧きます。

蝋 (ロウ)を使用した封蝋 (フウロウ) も大好きですで、そのセットも好きですが、
実際に使用したことはありません。

I didn't know the word 'Mandorla' when I photographed.
However, I could guess this is one of the stamps by the display, above.
I like stamps, though old ones are even more interesting.

6) 感謝 / Gratitude
鎖付図書は素敵な図書館で、魅了される本、挿絵、道具などなどがたくさんありました。人々の知識や想像力に溢れている空間で、いるだけでそれらに満たされるような、包み込まれるような気がしました。
本棚の前には、中世の聖職者たちが立っている風景が浮かびました。
ヘレフォード図や大聖堂内のアート作品も鎖付図書も魅力的！
ここにきて本当によかったです。

Chained Library is a wonderful library with many fascinating books, illustrations and tools.
In a space full of people's knowledge and imagination, I just stayed there I felt I was filled by them or I was wrapping around them.
Scenes of medieval clergy standing in front of the bookshelves came to mind.
Hereford Mappa Mundi, art works in the Cathedral and Chained Library are attractive!
It was really good to be here.
