1) マルクト広場 /  Grote Markt 

観光が目的でアントワープを訪ねたなら、誰もが行く場所が

マルクト広場 : グローテ・マルクト (Grote Markt)

でしょう。

広場には、

"手" を 投げる 'ブラボーくん'の彫像 (ブラボー噴水) があり、

アントワープ市庁舎 (Antwerpen Stadhuis / City Hall : ★)があります。

また、「ブラボー伝説」を知り、アントワープの名前の由来を知ります。

『フランダースの犬』[ウィーダ / Ouida (1839 -1908) 作 / 1871)]の主人公ネロが
応募した絵画コンクールの授賞式が行われた場所だそうです。
(英語文ではこの文章は載せません....ほとんどの西洋人は、『フランダースの犬』を知らないので、説明がめんど〜なんです）

建物がアントワープ市庁舎で、中心に'ブラボーくん'の彫像があります。
アントワープはいろいろなところで工事中で、
ここでも大きなクレーンが見えます。

Grote Markt (Great Market Square)
The building is Antwerpen Stadhuis, 
and there is a statue of 'Brabo' in the centre.
Antwerp is under construction in many places, 
and here we can see a big crane.

ブラボー像 / Statue Brabo

If you visit Antwerp for sightseeing, everyone would visit the Market Square: Grote Markt.

There is a statue of 'Brabo's throwing "hands" in the square : Brabo Fountatin, and there is 

Town Hall City : Stadhuis (City Hall) of Antwerp : ★.

Also people will know the origin of the name of Antwerp by "Brabo Legend".

2) アントワープ市庁舎 / Antwerpen Stadhuis

16世紀にアントワープは、大型港湾都市として繁栄し、それに適した堂々とした市庁舎がコルネリス・フロリス・デ・フリーント 2世 /  Cornelis Floris de Vriendt  / Cornelis II Floris De Vriendt (1514 - 1575) と

他の複数の建築家や芸術家 :

ウィレム・ヴァン・デン・ブロック /  Willem van den Broeck (1530 – 1580)、

ハンス・ヘンドリック・ヴァン・パッセンチェン / 
 Hans Hendrik van Paesschen (1510頃 -1582)

ジャン・ディエム / Jan Daems ( ?- ?)

などによって設計され、建てられました。

アントワープ市庁舎は、オランダの建築における新しいルネッサンス・スタイルの象徴となりました。

市庁舎は、ベルギーとフランスの鐘楼群として、ユネスコ世界遺産に登録されています。

ちなみに、ベルギーは、19世紀にネーデルラント連合王国から独立した国家になりました。

カラフルな、たくさんの旗が正面を飾っています。

1561〜1565年に建てられたこのルネサンスの建物は、

フランダースとイタリアの両方の影響を受けています。

Antwerpen Stadhuis

Plenty of colourful flags are decorating the facade.

Built between 1561 and 1565, this Renaissance building has been influenced  

by both Flemish and Italian archtecture.

In the 16th century, Antwerp prospered as a large port city, and the dignified city hall suitable for it was designed by 
 Cornelis Floris de Vriendt  / Cornelis II Floris De Vriendt (1514 - 1575)
 and several other architects and artists : 

Willem van den Broeck(1530 – 1580),

Hans Hendrik van Paesschen (c. 1510-1582)

Jan Daems ( ?- ?).

The Antwerpen Stadhuis became a figurehead for the new renaissance style of architecture in Holland. 

The Stadhuis is inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List along with the Belfries of Belgium and France.

By the way, Belgium became a country, independent from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in the 19th Century.

3) ブラボー / Brabo 

ブラボー噴水 

'ブラボー' は、古代ローマ人の英雄シルヴィウス•ブラボー。

 Brabo Fountain

'Brabo' was  a mythical Roman soldier, Silvius Brabo.

A. "ブラボー伝説" / 'Brabo Legend'
'ブラボー伝説' は、アントワープの名前の由来として語られています。

下記はWikiより

"街の名称は、古くは巨人アンティゴーンと英雄ブラボーの伝説に由来するとされてきた。スヘルデ川の川岸の城に住む巨人ドルオン・アンティゴーン(Druon Antigoon)は、城付近を通り過ぎる船に通行料を求め、それに応じない者に対しては、その手を切り落として河へ放り捨てた。

しかし、ついにローマの戦士ブラボーがアンティゴーンの息の根を止め、手を切り落として河へ投げ捨てた。

Antwerpen はこの出来事に由来し、handwerpen（hand 手 ＋ werpen 投げる）に元を辿るという。"

巨人の手 / Giant's Hand 

'Brabo Legend'

According to Wiki,

"Silvius Brabo was a mythical Roman soldier who is said to have killed a giant, and by this would have created the name Brabant.

Later this story was also used to explain the name Antwerp (meaning hand throwing). Brabo once killed a giant, called Druon Antigoon, who asked money from people who wanted to pass the bridge over the river Scheldt. 

When they didn't want to or couldn't pay, he cut off their hand and threw it in the river. Because of this, Brabo also removed the hand of the giant, and threw it into the river."

The 'Brabo Legend' is told as the origin of the name of Antwerp.



B. アントワープの名前の由来 / Origin of the Name, Antwerp
名前の由来には、
"アントウェルペンという名称を「an 't werf （on the wharf、wharfは波止場)」、または「Aan 't werp（at the warp）」に由来する....
ここでの「warp」とは、高潮でも農地が水浸しにならないだけの土手を築いたことを指しており、農民たちは堤防の先に農地を広げていった。「werp」という語には「pol（ポルダー、干拓地）」という意味もある。"
というものや、
"現在最も有力な説は、ガロ・ローマ文化期のラテン語「antverpia」であり、アントウェルペンはかつてのスヘルデ川の湾曲にそって形成されたとする。
この語は「Ante」（before）と「Verpia (砂などの粒子が水などによって堆積、沈殿したもの）」に由来しており、スヘルデ川の湾曲に伴う堆積作用によって土地が形成されていったことを示している。"
というものもあります。

でも、おもしろく感じるのは、ブラボー伝説ですね。

彫刻の開幕式は1887年

It is said that Jef Lambeaux was born at number 55 in this square.

       The opening ceremony for the sculpture was in 1887.

Origin of the Name, Antwerp

The origin of the name, Antwerp has different stories from the Legend.

According to Wiki about this,

"The reason is the legend of the name of the city, in which it is said that the giant Druon Antigoon cut off a hand to all the ship captains who moored in the area and refused to pay toll, then throwing it to the Scheldt. 

The captain of the Roman army Brabo cut off the giant's hand imitating what he had done. 

The fountain reflects the moment when the Brabo throws the giant's hand into the river.

According to this legend, the etymology of the name of the city Antwerp is a composition of the Dutch words "(h)ant" (hand) and "werpen" (launch)."

Other reasons said that

"Antwerp's name derives from "anda" (at) and "werpum" (wharf) to give an 't werf (on the wharf, in the same meaning as the current English wharf).
Aan 't werp (at the warp) is also possible.
This "warp" (thrown ground) is a man-made hill or a river deposit, high enough to remain dry at high tide, whereupon a construction could be built that would remain dry.
Another word for werp is pol (dyke) hence polders (the dry land behind a dyke, that was no longer flooded by the tide)."

However, we feel the 'Bravo Legend is fun, don't we?

"手のお菓子"では、このお店が一番人気なのだそうです。
自転車での宣伝が好きです。

It seems that this shop is the most popular of "Hand-Shaped Sweets".

I like the bicycle advertising.

アントワープのお菓子やさんは、よく、大きなお菓子のキャラクターや
人形をウィンドーディスプレイに使用している印象を持ちました。

I had my impression that confectionery shops in Antwerp often use big sweet characters or figures as a window display.

他のお店でも、ビスケットやチョコレートの'手'が売られています。
Other shops sell biscuits or chocolate 'hands'.

おまけ/ In addition

お菓子ではありませんが、こんな大きな手も街中にあります。
It is not sweets, but such big hand is in the town.

Arbeid Vrijheid

マルクト広場にある彫像なのですが、誰なのか未だにわかりません。

It is a statue in the Market Square, but I still do not know who it is.

ヨーロッパの観光地ではよく見かける馬車
どこでも馬は可愛く感じます。

In tourist spots in Europe I see often horse-drawn carriages.

I feel every horse is lovely.
