We have looked at Prague Castle for two days and at last we walked in the Royal Garden.

There were not so many tourists, so that we could be easy going and strolling.

The face of the lion (I think) quite sweet.
I feel the taste a little kitsch....

When I look at somebody who looks after a garden,
I have grateful feelings.

It seemed to have being used as a greenhouse, now there was an Exhibition.
I felt fun although I did not have motivation for entering with some fee.

In 1534, Ferdinand I (1503 -1564/ Bohemia King, Region 1526 - 64) ordered
to make a Renaissance Garden.

Currently the garden is in a traditional "English-style" park
created in the mid of the 19th Century,
although some parts are close to Summer Royal Palace which are
still Renaissance or Baroque style.

Ball Game Hall

11 : Ball Game Hall Míčovna
All the outside walls of the building have decorations to catch the eye.
What is that? Automatically we are drawn towards the building.

Originally this Renaissance building was for ball games,
later a riding school and then a stable.

Here, they say Ball Games were perhaps between Tennis and Badminton.
According to Prague.Net :
"Noblemen and noblewomen used to throw here leather balls or used a feather ball and a racket in the game very similar to the present badminton."

Joseph II (1741- 1790 / Bohemia King Region 1780 - 1790)
used this as a military storehouse.

In the 20th century it was damaged by deterioration and gunfire.
It was burned to such an extent that only the peripheral walls remained in 1945.

Its reconstruction was started under Jože Plečnik (1872 - 1957)  and
in 1952, it was finished under Pavel. Janak (1881 - 1956),
however, this hall in the closed Royal Garden was remote from the public.

After 1989, it was made accessible to the public and
is now used mainly for exhibitions
of creative art, concerts and important social events.

In 2013 a Japanese company, Panasonic had an event.

This was a ceremony of lighting the LED lamps provided by Panasonic
for Prague Castle which uses 10,000 Panasonic's LED lamps.

You can see the event and the inside of the hall →.

In 1538, Ferdinand I began the Royal Summer Palace
for Queen Anna (1503 -1547).
However, before the Palace was finished in 1564 she passed away.
In 1564, he passed away, so I wonder if he saw the palace after it was finished.

This couple had 15 children
which was the beginning of the tradition of the prolific House of Habsburg.

Rudolf II

Patron

They say that Rudolf II (1552 - 1612 / Bohemian King, Region1575 - 1612) was not so good at statesmanship, although he was very cultured, was excellent as
a highly‐educated man and a good patron for many artists.

 Rudolf II

(1552 - 1612 /Bohemian King, Region1575 - 1612)
For
foreign policy, the House of Habsburg had carried on
consanguineous marriage, so they were successful.
On the other hand, many members of the family had problem
about 'Prognathism'. We can see he had it.

This is a very sweet house, isn' this?

Pastel Coloured

The "Golden Lane" is north of the Eastern Gate and pastel coloured houses are lined up together.

Nowadays the houses are souvenir shops.

Very often the explanations are below

'Rudolf II let alchemists live here, so they named here 'Golden Lane'.

In the fact, this is not true.

The True Story?

The tower on the corner was a dungeon which is close to the east gate
as well as the end of Golden Lane.

The True Story?

In the 16th Century, Rudolf II had the houses built for Prague Castle guards.

At that time castle servants, the castle marksmen lived there and the street was known as “Archery Lane”.

In the 17th Century, goldsmiths moved in here and perhaps the street renamed 'Golden Lane'.

Rudolf II seemed to have his own 'Alchemists', although they lived a different area in the castle.

Originally 24 houses were there, although in the 19th Century one side of the street was demolished, because it was judged inadequate for living.

Before the World Second Wars (1939 - 1945), poor people lived there, although after the Wars the first Republic  took and here was nationalized for the picturesque character of the lane so that the people were ejected.

The houses were restored and repainted with pastel colours between 1952 and 1955.

I made this story from mainly these websites :  / .

Novelists

Franz Kafka, 1917

Kafka

Franz Kafka (1883 - 1924)'s sisters lived in No.22 House and he lived there for a while: 1916~1917 which is well known.

I only read his work : "The Metamorphosis" (1915) and I remember the shock after reading it.

Maybe I read "The Trial" (1927), although my memory is vacant....

JaroslavSeifert

Another famous writer, JaroslavSeifert (1901 - 1986) lived here in the 1930s in a now demolished house, who was a Nobel Prize in Literature Winner.

I had never heard of him.

When he was awarded it, the government seemed to hide it because he was regarded as a disturbing element.

Alchemist

Actually, it is different, but I feel I understand why the rumor spread which Alchemists lived so the street named the Golden Lane.

That story is more attractive than the truth.

Alchemists sounds well ... somehow alluring at least for me and if I think Alchemists lived here, my imaginations could be stirred up.

Moreover, I feel Kafka and this urban myth have a strange affinity.

Alchemists mainly tried to make gold so they looked suspicious, however, they were sometimes useful.

For example,According to Japanese Wikipedia below (translated myself)

"At that time Europe imported porcelain from China and Japan and it was very expensive.
It was an alchemist, Johann Friedrich Böttger who rediscovered a method of producing porcelain in Europe.
Augustus II the Strong ordered to him to find the method and he investigated and succeeded in the production of white porcelain in 1709."

He was was not so good at statesmanship, although he was cultured,
