After Kabuki Curtain, we see a gorgeous thick curtain!
I felt the audience was one third foreigners, one third students and one third the general public.
There were a few cars in front of the theatre which looked like somewhere's  Embassy's cars.

R hadn't seen Kabuki.

I found out about a performance of Kabuki which suited R very well.

14:30 ~

I heard that nowadays they perform 'Discover KABUKI' in June and July every year.

First of all, they showed and explained the foundations of KABUKI and a summary of the story with demonstrations and slides in Japanese and English.

I have seen Kabuki a few times although I am still a beginner for Kabuki, so I was impressed and enjoyed 'Part Ⅰ'.

In Part II we appreciated the Kabuki playing of just the highlight scenes.

Main Cast : Sakanaya Sogoro : The third NAKAMURA Hashinosuke : the eighth Nakamura Shikan.

Today, Our Seats are on the Ground Floor
I heard that Kabuki-za (in Ginza, the principal theatre in Tokyo

for the traditional kabuki drama form) has a few seats from which
audiences cannot see all the stage, however,

in the National Theatre people can see  all the stage from all seats .
And also all the tickets are available.

Story

Kyōgen

Story

"Shin-Sarayashiki Tsuki no Amagasa" was based on  "Banchō Sarayashiki " .
About "Sarayashiki" from Wiki below
"Banchō Sarayashiki or Bancho Sarayashi is a Japanese ghost story of broken trust and broken promises, leading to a dismal fate.
The story of Okiku and the Nine Plates is one of the most famous in Japanese folklore, and continues to resonate with audiences today."

The dramatist of Kabuki or Kyōgen  , Kawatake Mokuami (1816 -1893).
About him from Wikipedia below
[It has been said that "as a writer of plays of Kabuki origin, he was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Japan has ever known."
He wrote 150 or so plays over the course of his fifty-year career, covering a wide variety of themes, styles, and forms, including short dance pieces, period plays, contemporary genre pieces, tragedies and comedies, as well as adaptations of foreign (Western) stories, ~ ]

When the work : "Shin-Sarayashiki Tsuki no Amagasa" was released, they played the whole story, although gradually they had tended only to play the later part : "Sakanaya Sogoro".

The earlier part : the common name; Otuta-goroshi ; Killing Otsuta, has nasty scenes (like torture) which reminds me of the original, "Banchō Sarayashiki", however, the later part was played on the day which has joy and sorrow.

At that time the third Namakura Hashinouke played as Sakanaya Sogoro.

Now (June 2017) he is the eighth Nakamura Shikan :  (you can see him here).

We saw his performance before he succeeded to the name : the eighth Nakamura Shikan in October 2016, didn't we?

really enjoyed Kabuki and was pleased with the event.

He said he would see and visit again.

His first experience of Kabuki looked successful.  Good!

"Shunkyo - Kagamijishi" ; common name, Kagamijishi
The role of Kagamijishi was arguably played most successfully
by the sixth Onoe Kikugoro
The story is about a lovely girl, but who does become a Lion spirit.

Yoshiya Nobuko Memorial Museum in Kamakura, 2nd of June 2016

The Gate of Yoshiya Nobuko Memorial Museum in Kamakura

I knew the gate would be open on 2nd of June.

I passed the Memorial Museum in Kamakura () quite often, although I had never seen the gate open.

Photograph 2nd of June 2016
This was the first time I saw the gate is open!

Yoshiya Nobuko Memorial Museum in Kamakura :  was donated to Kamakura city in compliance with the novelist Nobuko Yoshiya (1896 - 1973)'s dying wishes, who lived here later in life.

Pamphlet, just in Japanese→

I haven't read the novelist's work and I hadn't even heard her name before living in Kamakura.

After living in Kamakura, I just got information about her which I read from the pamphlet, Japanese Wikipedia and so on in Internet.

This Museum and the garden are lovely, although somehow I guess I would dislike her work, so I would not read her books.

[Seiko Tanabe (1928 -) is a fan of Nobuko Yoshiya and I am difficult for Seiko Tanabe's works which reinforces my guessing. Sorry to Tanabe's fans.]

Well, I love 'Fantasy Literature', so I might feel the worlds are different from

Yoshiya's world. (I haven't read her works, although I say like this, sorry.)

However, I feel her life or her personality are attractive.

When she was a high-school student, she listened to a lecture

by Nitobe Inazō (1862-1933),
"As women you should aim to be complete human beings rather than just 'a good wife and a wise mother'."
and she was impressed.

After then she set out to become a literary person.

When she got a lot of royalties from her works, she went to Europe for about one year with her lifetime partner, Chiyo Monma (?-?).

At that time, literature was a men's world, although she made her pioneering way as a woman novelist and she succeeded, she lived throughout as a homosexual, she loved horse races, she was a horse owner, these and other anecdotes captured me.

For me, one of the pleasures about a destination a journey.

Yoshiya Nobuko Memorial Museum
Remodeled by Isoya Yoshida (1894 -1974), 1962.
When Yoshiya was 66 years old she requested Yoshida
'I hope my house would be like a nunnery in Nara',
and he redesigned the house.
I feel her thought that she wanted to concentrate on her work calmly.
Now I have made my works on a Mountain, Kamakura.
I just guess her thought, although I think I have a similar thought to her thought.

The background is a mountain, I feel this is Kamakura's good point.

They say "The idea is that the eye-level of people sitting on chairs in the western room is the same as people sitting on tatami in the Japanese room."

I remember that the technique is also used in the former Yanagi Sōetsu (1889 - 1961) house, nowadays 'The Japan Folk Crafts Museum- West Annex'.

The house was designed by Yanagi Sōetsu.

Drawing Room
There is an Engawa, which I love.
About Engawa from Wiki below
"In Japanese architecture, an engawa  is a typically wooden strip of flooring immediately before windows and storm shutters inside traditional Japanese rooms.
Recently this term has also come to mean the veranda outside the room as well, which was traditionally referred to as a nure'en ."

 Front Garden
The Novelist, Yoshiya had the whole house moved back 10m,
and made her main garden larger.

Her Workiing Room
We can see a back garden.
It is easy to imagine that sometimes she looked at the garden
while she was writing, isn' it?

Now we cannot open a windows.

Garden

This flower is like Nobuko Yoshiya

and the flowers below are like Chiyo Monma...?

Japanese Apricots
They say the Japanese apricots here were regularly harvested at that time,
though nowadays not so much.

Shelter
Here is a quiet place, too.
I think these spaces are a necessity.
While I imagined Yoshiya walked here and had a rest time,
I walked.

In addition

After Yoshiya Nobuko Memorial Museum, we went to
Yuigahama Street and I found a swallow's nest.
The little darlings are waiting for their parents to come back
and they stay quiet.

Give me~!
Wow! Just as their parent returned,
they were excited like this!
