❷ - 1) サセックスの旅 / The Trip in Sussex - Alfriston, 27th ~ 29th of August in 2013

1) アルフリストン村 / Alfriston

アルフリストン/Alfriston 村は、西サセックスにあり、カックミア川/ River Cuckmere に沿って位置しています。

アルフリストン(Alfriston)を宿泊の地として選んだのは、

エリナ • ファージョン/ Eleanor Farjeon (1881 - 1965) に関係する事柄があると推測したからです。

また、彼女がお気に入りのお散歩道は、：サウス ダウンズ ウエイ/ South Downs Way (下の図では、かなりEastbourne 寄り）らしく、その道が村を通っていると思ったからです。

サウス ダウンズ ウエイ/ South Downs Way 周辺は、サウスダウンズ国立公園/ South Downs National Parkにもなっています。

South Downs Way
サウス ダウンズ ウエイ/ South Downs Wayは、
ウィンチェスター/ Winchester から
イーストボーンの白亜の崖：セブン シスターズ/ Seven Sisters
につながる全長160Kmのオフ ロードです。

South Downs Way is an off-road trail, 

from Winchester  to Seven Sisters  ; Chalk Cliffs in Eastbourne
and the full length of 160Km.

National Trails

Alfriston is in West Sussex and sits along the River Cuckmere.

I choose  to stay here, because I thought the village had some relationship with Eleanor Farjeon (1881 - 1965) and also her favourite walks were 
along the South Downs Way crossing the village.
 (In above picture, this area is quite close to Eastbourne.)

The South Downs Way winds through the South Downs National Park.

1918年にエリナー•ファージョン (1881 -1965) は200部ほどの
私家版の詩集を出しました。
彼女が チチェスター / Chichester から アルフリストン / Alfriston まで
徒歩旅行した時の短い詩、６編を集めたものです。
石井桃子女史は、このときの経験がのちの『リンゴ畑のマーティン•ピピン』
に生かされていると書いています(要約)。

ファージョンの住まいや
お気に入りの散歩道や彼女の家、他を求めて私達は、
アルフリストン村に来ました。
なかなか彼女に関する物事が見つけられませんでしたが、
ようやくある店で、彼女の詩を額に入れて飾っているのを見つけました。
まあ、それでも定員さんたちも彼女のことは知らないようでした。

She made a book of poems: "All the Way to Alfriston", 1918.
It was a private edition.
 When she had a walking holiday alone from Chichester to Alfriston, 
she wrote 6 short poems that became the book.  

 I came to Alfriston for Eleanor Farjeon (1881 - 1965).
I would find her house, favourite walking and somethings,
although it was quite difficult.
However, finally I found one of her poems with a frame in a shop,
though even the staff do not know about her.

2) 素敵な村 / Lovely Village 

私たちが北側から、アルフリストン村入りしたのは、2013年8月27日の夕方でした。

宿泊するB&B: "Riverdale House" は村の南にあるので、村を通り抜けて行きます。

道路沿いの建物が古き良き時代の雰囲気を残していて、期待大！

そしてその期待を裏切ることなく、村もその周辺も素敵でした。

村の殆どの撮影は、29日にしました。

カフェとパブは別のセクションに載せます。

訪れてから知ったのですが、1896年にナショナル•トラストが獲得した
建築物第一号："Alfriston Clergy House "
がこの村にあるのも知りました。

そこを訪れたときのものも別のセクションに載せます。


Lovely Village 

When we arrived in Alfriston from the North, it was the evening of 27th of August in 2013.

Our B&B:  "Riverdale House" is the south of the village, so our car went through the village. 

The buildings along the road have the atmosphere of the good old days, so I expected so much about the village.

The village never betrayed my expectations, the village and surroundings are very lovely. 

Most photographs of the village were taken on the 29th.

I will show you some photographs of pubs and cafes in a different section.

And also I found out after arriving in the village that the "Alfriston Clergy House " was the first building of the National Trust in 1896.

I show you our  "Alfriston Clergy House "  visit in a different section, too. 


3) 建物/ Buildings

"Market Cross" と呼ばれる村の中心
"Market Cross" : the Centre of the Village.

左の建物はギャラリーですが、入りませんでした。
On the left of the photograph is a gallery,
although we did not go in.

屋根の上に植物が育っています。
こういう状態を嫌いな人は結構いるかもしれませんが、
建物とあっていると私は思います。

The plants are growing up on the roof.
A few people might hate that
although I think the plants suit the building. 

こんな道を見つけたので、奥へ入ってみました。
I found this path, so I tried to go along here.

壁から溢れ出る木々や花々
Trees and flowers overflow the wall.

奥には新しい家々がありました。
There are new houses at the back.

新しい住宅街
New Residential Street

新しい家でも、村の雰囲気を損ねないのが素敵!

Even though the houses are quite new,
 they do not lose the village atmosphere, it is lovely!

おそらくこの家も新しい。
でも古そうに見えますよね？
まあ、新しいといっても、築1年や2年ではないでしょうけれど....

Probably this house is new.
However, it looks old, doesn't it?
Well, even though I say new, 
it was not built in the last couple of years....

4) 店 / Shops
A.本屋さん/ Book Shop

本屋さん/ Book Shop
この本屋の店主さんから、
ファージョン情報を少し手に入れました。
ファージョンが住んでいた村を教えてもらいました。
アルフリストン村に住んでいたのではなかったようです....。
彼女の家がどこかは秘密。
というのも、その家には彼女の子孫が住んでいるからでした。

We got information about Farjeon from this shop owner.
She told us the village where Farjeon had lived.
Farjeon did not live in Alfriston.

The owner did not tell us which house Farjeon had lived in the other village,
because one of her descendants still lives in the house.

B."Village Store"

村の中心にある"Village Store"
"Village Store" built in the centre of the village.

1階は食料品を販売し、

2階の一部はミニ博物館のような展示がしてあります。

'ファージョンの詩'もここに飾ってあります。

The ground floor is for food and 

a corner of the first floor is a mini-museum.

A Farjeon poem is displayed here, too.

西洋トチノキ/マロニエが

1893年ビクトリア女王の戴冠式の際にマーケット広場に植樹され、

長年、'戴冠式の木' / 'The Coronation Tree'と呼ばれ、

村のポストカードや絵などに使用され親しまれてきました。

ですが、2006年に危険状態にあると判断され

倒されてしまったのです。

その木を使用してこの木彫作品は作られています。

私は西洋トチノキのことを'栗の木' (ブナ科クリ属)と

つい言ってしまいますが、違うのです。

もともと'Horse Chestnut'と名付けられたときから

クリノキの仲間と誤解されたのですから、

私が間違えたとしても、仕方ないことです。

栗と根本的に違うのは、実は食用ではありません。

Always I refer to 'Horse 'Chestnut' as 'Chestnut'.

However, they are different.

When people named 'Horse 'Chestnut' for the tree,

the people misunderstood the tree was one of the 'Chestnut' group,

so I cannot help it even though I am always wrong. 

Basically the fruit of 'Horse 'Chestnut' is unfit to eat. 

C. "Music Memorbilia"

音楽関係の雑貨などを販売しています。
もちろん、レコードもいくつか....

They sell things which are related to music. 
Of course, some records are there.

音楽ショップは、その昔(15世紀頃)は
鞍を売っていたらしい....?
鞍は英語で自転車のサドル：Saddleと同じであると
初めて知りました。

The Music Shop might have sold saddles in the15th Century.

ライトも古そうです。
The light looks old, too.

D. "STEAMER TRADING COOK SHOP"

"Steamer Trading"
数年前に、ギルフォードで見つけた雑貨店の
"Steamer Trading"が、この地が一号店でした。
現在、英国に28店舗で、展開しています。

ギルフォード(スティーマートレディング）については下記

I found "Steamer Trading" in Guildford a few years ago. 
Their first shop was here.
Now they have 28 shops in UK.

4) その他 /  Others

デザインとこの腐食具合が、
ガラスと木のドアにあっているように思いました。
重くもなく軽くもなく....
そしてこの村にあるから良いのかもしれません。

I felt the design with the corrosion suits
 this door with the glass and the wood.
They are not too heavy and not too light....
And also they look right in this village.
