ケント旅行に来て、初めて外食します。

It was the first time we went to a restaurant in Kent Trip.

The Goods Shed
デイリーファーマーズマーケット：Daily Farmers Marketと
フードホール：Food Hall と
レストランが一緒になったお店です。

2002年に、地元生産物の市場(デイリーファーマーズマーケット)と
レストランがオープンしましたが、その後発展し、
地元のものでない生産物も取り扱うようになりました: Food Hall。
彼らのWebsite：★は英語のみですが、写真が見られます。

This is a Daily Farmers Market, a Food Hall and a 'Restaurant'.
In 2002, the market and the restaurant were opened,
later the food hall : their food is not only local food 
but also other area's.

この日のメニュー / Today's Menu

私はイカ料理を前菜として選びました。
イカも久しぶり、にんにくの風味も久しぶり〜！
美味しかったです！

I chose a squid dish as my starter.
I missed squid and garlic tastes.
It was lovely!

メインはラム料理！
ここで赤ワインもハーフで注文してしまいました！

Lamb is my main dish!
Here, I ordered to half of a bottle of red wine, too!

Rのメインはサーモンとカニですが、
メニューにある彼の嫌いなもの、
ネギ属：Allium が入っているオレンジドレッシングはなし。
オレンジドレッシング付きにできると言われて、
Rはとても楽しみにしていたので、がっかりしてました。
かわいそうなR！

R's main dish is a salmon and crab,
although it does not have the promised orange dressing,
which includes his hated Allium .
R expected the sauce so much,
so he was depressed so much by their deception.
Poor R!

パナコッタ、ルバーブソース
これはRのデザートです。
'ルバーブ' は日本では馴染みがまだありませんが、
英国ではよく知られています。
見かけは蕗のようですが、酸味が強い野菜で、
ジャムによく使用されています。
日本語では'食用大黄'と言うようです(知らなかった~!)。
でも最近は'ルバーブ'の方が
よく呼ばれてるのではないかと感じます。

2) カンタベリーを離れる日 - 6月29日  
    leaving Canterbury Day - 29th of June

A. カンタベリーで行けなかった所！
     Didn't Make them in Canterbury

 'Eastbridge Hospital'も世界最古の現役の学校の一つ、
聖オーガスティンが597年に作った　
キングス•スクール/ 'King's School'
も見に行けませんでした。

この学校は中へは入れないので、建物を見たかっただけなのです。

それさえもできませんでした。

また、チョコレートショップのシュガー•ボーイ/Sugar Boyにも興味がとてもあったのですが、行く事ができませんでした。

そのお店は
『チョコレート工場の秘密』
[原作、ロアルド•ダール(1961 - 1990) / 初版,1964] の
映画：「チャーリーとチコレート工場」
(2005, 監督 ：ティム•バートン)
に、ここのお店がお菓子を提供しました。

私は基本的に甘いものが苦手なのですが、ロアルド•ダールも
ティム•バートンも好きなので、このお店を見たかったし、お店のお菓子も買いたかったのです。

商品はネットショップで買い物ができ、世界中に送ってくれるようですが....。

Didn't Make them in Canterbury

We could not visit  'Eastbridge Hospital' and 'King's School' which is one of the oldest schools all over the world, St. Augustine established it in 597.

I know we cannot go into 'King's School', I just would look at their school, even though I could not make it.

And also I am interested in a chocolate shop, 'Sugar Boy', although 
I did not go there, too. 

The shop supplied sweets for a film: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, 2005, direct by Tim" Burton (1958~) which is based on 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' by Roald Dahl (1961 - 1990), 1964.

Basically I do not fancy sweets, however, I do like Roald Dahl and 
Tim" Burton, so I wanted to look at the shop and buy some sweets in the shop, even though the shop has Internet shop and they deliver overseas too. 


B. カンタベリー城壁 / Canterbury City Walls

カンタベリー城壁は、車で移動するときに眺めただけで、ゆっくり見て廻りませんでした。

車から撮影したものをお見せします。

I only looked at the Canterbury City Walls when we moved by car, 
I did not see them slowly. 

So I will show you my photographs which I took of the walls from our moving car.

最も古い防壁はローマ帝国時代、
 270または280年に作られていました。
それらは土堤に石がつまれたもので、
溝や塔によっても構成されていました。
少なくとも5つ門があったと考えられています。
ローマ帝国軍がカンタベリーから退いた後も、
城壁が残されたのは、聖オーガスティンの判断かもしれません。
また、アングロサクソン人もヴァイキングから守るために、
城壁を維持しました。

その後もその時代の強い勢力によって
維持されたり、破壊されたり、修復されたりしてきました。

⓭ケント旅行 / Kent Trip - 6) Canterbury: Boat Tour, 28th of June

ボートツアー/ Boat Tour

英国での友人:Mio がカンタベリーへ行くならぜひ、ボートツアーを！と勧めてくれました。

カンタベリーでは、いくつかのボート旅行が用意されています。

手漕ぎボートとパンチングと言われる竿であやつるタイプがあります。

'Leeds Castle' でパンチングボートを見かけ、優雅だな〜と思っていました。

けれども、時間的にそれも出来ず、手漕ぎボート: 

 'Canterbury HIstorical River Tours Visitor Attractions'

を選びました。

まあ、選んだというよりも、ちょうど、そこにあったからに近い状況でした。

私達は 'Eastbridge Hospital' を地図を見ながら探しても見つからず、人に聞いてもわからず、閉館時間もせまっていて、どうしようかと、うろうろしていました。

そのときに、ボートツアーの彼らが看板をかたづけ始めたのを見つけ、慌てて、彼らを追いかけてお願いしました。

彼らは私達のためだけにボートを出してくれました。

ありがとうございました。

そして、楽しかったです。Thank you!

ところで、ウィンブルドンの家に帰宅後にMioに聞きましたら(彼女と家をシェアーしています）、彼女はパンチングボートの方に乗ったのだと知りました。

パンチングの方が、ロマンチックなのかもしれないな〜...。

それでも、手漕ぎボートでも、十分雰囲気は味わえたと思います。

Boat Tour

Mio is my friend in Britain, she recommended me to take a 'Boat Tour', if I go to Canterbury, please enjoy 'Boat'. 

There are different boat tours.

The types of boat are a rowing boat and a punt ; 'Punting' refers to pushing the boat by a long pole (punt). 

I saw a punt in 'Leeds Castle' and I felt it was elegant.

However, we chose a rowing boat type :

 'Canterbury HIstorical River Tours Visitor Attractions'. 

Well, it happened  that way.

It was convenient and good timing for us rather than our choice.

We looked for 'Eastbridge Hospital' while we looked at our map, although we could not find it and it was close to their closing time, 

R asked people who did not know it and we were just wondering. 

Then we found the boat tour people taking away their sign, so we followed and asked about the tour. 

They made it only for us.

Thank you very much.

We enjoyed the tour very much.

By the way, I asked Mio about boats after we came back to our house in Wimbledon, she went on a 'Punting' (we share the house with her).

I think 'Punting' might be more romantic.

However, I feel I had a good enough atmosphere by a row boat.

右側の家：'Old Weavers House'、'ユグノーの家'とも説明されます。
この家の基礎は12世紀からと言われています。
現在はレストランになっています。

そうそう、この男の子？男性がガイドです。
大学の歴史科を卒業して、この職業についたと言ってました。

Here we go!
When Canterbury is advertised, they often use a house, 
in the right of the photograph: 
'Old Weavers House' or 'Huguenot House'.
They say the foundations of this house were built 
in about 12th century.
Now it is a restaurant.
Their website has the history : ★

On! Yes! This boy or man was our guide.
He introduced himself that he had graduated 
in history in a university and got this job.

Old Weavers House : 古い織工の家

ユグノー: Huguenot はキリスト教のひとつです。

16,17世紀に多くのユグノーの人々: Huguenots は、

北フランス、ベルギー、ホーラント(オランダ西部)から
宗教の迫害によって避難してきて、
カンタベリーやサンドイッチ、その他に落ち着きました。

彼らは織工、製紙、金細工、装丁などの技術をもたらしました。

エリザベス1世は織工達：Weavers が
ここで仕事することを許しました。

'Old Weavers House'

Huguenots were members of one branch of Christianity : Huguenot.

Many Huguenots came to England because of religious persecution

 in the 16th and 17th centuries from northern France, Belgium 
and Holland and then they settled down 
in Canterbury,  Sandwich and others.

They brought their skills and techniques for instance,

weaver, making paper, goldsmith and bookbinder.

Elizabeth Ⅰ granted permission to set up 
their weaving businesses here.

違う時代に来たような感覚になります。
The sense is of coming to a different period.

右の建物が私達が探していた 'Eastbridge Hospital'.

私達の地図とは違う所にありました。

The right building is 'Eastbridge Hospital' 

which we looked for.

It stands in a different place on our map. 

珍しい景色を喜んでいたら....

I am pleased by unusual views then....

橋の下に、鳩が！
しかも網がはられているのにかかわらず!
鳩はどんな所にもいるのですね〜......

Some pigeons are under the bridge,
even though there is covered with wires！
Pigeons are everywhere, aren't they !?......

折り返し地点
城壁の外に行くのかも？と多少期待していたので、
ちょっと残念。

The Turning Point
I expected to go outside the city walls a little,
so I was a little disappointed. 

再びスタート地点ヘ

ボートの船着き場は、"古い織工の家/ Old Weavers House"の後ろにあり、そこにはまた
Ducking Stool: 水責め椅子: 懲罰椅子(下の写真)
が残されています。

そして反対側へ進みます。

Again past the start point

The boat harbour is behind the house and also there is 
a Ducking Stool(below photograph).

And then we went the opposite way.

Ducking Stool: 水責め椅子: 懲罰椅子
口やかましい女性は 'がみがみ女'(という刑があったのです！)や、
不誠実な女性や、魔女の疑いがもたれた女性などが刑罰として
この椅子に載せられました。
男性が同じ事をしてもこの椅子は殆ど使用されなかったのです。

この刑に処せられた女性が気の毒.....
水死を免れても、ガイドの説明に寄ると、
当時のこの川の水は汚水でまみれていたということなので、
何かの病気になって亡くなったりしたと思います。

現在、この椅子が残されているのは、
観光のためなのかもしれませんが、
男性がいかに身勝手に生きて来たか、
女性を自分の都合良い存在にしてきたか
の証ともなっているように思います。

Ducking Stool
This chair was used for punishment：
common scold, causing nuisance and quarrelling with neighbours,
unfaithful women, suspicion of witchcraft and so on.
Even though men did similar things, it was not used against men.

I am very sorry for the women who had this punishment.
Even if they did not die by river water,
our guide said the river was full of polluted water at that time,
so I think they died or got sick with some kind of disease.

Today, the chair is kept, the reason might be for tourism,
although I think it shows the evidence that how men have been selfish and how they treated women as they liked.

マロー劇場 / Marlowe Theatre

現在の建物は新しく、

2011年10月に第３番目のマロー劇場 / Marlowe Theatre 

としてオープンされました。

The building is new, 

the third Marlowe Theatre  was opened in October, 2011.

Designed by an architect Keith Williams.

この川は  'Great Stour'と呼ばれています。
They call this river,  'Great Stour' .

Millers Arms - Shepherd Neame
Millers Arms がパブで、Shepherd Neameがビールの醸造社
この醸造社は英国で最も古いものです。
Rが今年、七里ケ浜の西友で見つけた
英国産のビールはここのものでした。
奇遇です〜！

ここがもうひとつの折り返し点です。

Millers Arms is a pub and 
Shepherd Neame is the oldest Brewer in Britain.
R found a bottle of British beer this year which came from here.
It is coincidence, isn't it? 

Here is another turning point. 

同じ場所でも、行きと帰りでは景色は違います。
面白いですよね。

Even same places are different views
from going and returning.
It is interesting, isn't it?

なんの画像処理もしていませんが、
それ風に見えます。

I do not do any image processing,
 although it looks like that.

レギング/ Legging
橋の下は狭いので、ボートを動かす方法の一つです。
 ガイドさんの話では、昔(いつくらいかは？)は、
子供が橋の周りをうろうろして、
安い賃金でこの仕事を買って出たそうです。

It is low under the bridge.
so this is one of method of moving boats.
From our guide, in old period (I do not know 'when'),
children waited around bridges and then
they seemed to volunteer for this work
for a low fee.

戻って来ました。楽しかったです。
