旧聖チャッズ教会 / Old St.Chad's Church

18世紀末
旧聖チャッズ教会は、中世前期に創設され、その後増築され、
18世紀末まで大きな建物でした。
ですが、1788年には老朽化のため大きく崩れ堕ちてしまい、
その後、修復されることはありませんでした。

it was a big building by the end of 18th Century.
However,
it largely
collapsed in 1788 because its deterioration
and later it was never repaired .

クオリー公園から新しい聖チャッズ教会 を見る
新しいと言っても、1792年に建築されているので 新しいというのは語弊がありますね。 この教会自体、老朽化のため、2012年に修復が行われ、 今後の修復予定も持っています。 内部と今後の修復予定→★ (英語ですが、クリックすると内部の写真が見られます。 私は'Robert Thompson Mouse'が好きです) New St.Chad's Church (★) From Quarry Park I say 'New', however, the church was built in 1792, so 'New' is misleading, isn't it? 中世の時の姿のままを保っている最も古い教会です。

| 教会の敷地は中世時代、マーケットの場所でした。 There was a Medieval Market in St. Mary Church site.  
カドフェルのお話では、保安官 ヒュー ベリンガー (Hugh Beringar) の家は
聖メアリー教会の近くです。
In the Cadfael's stories, Sheriff Hugh Beringar's house lay
close to St.Mary's Church.

D.ステンドグラス

Stained Glass
豪華なステンドグラスがたくさんありますが、最も有名なのは14世紀に作られた
"エッサイの窓" / "The Jesse Window "
と呼ばれるものです。
このステンドグラスは、もとは旧チャッズ教会にありましたが、1788年に旧チャッズ教会が崩れ落ちてしまったので、そこから移設されたのです。
さらに元をたどれば、本来このステンドグラスは地元の修道士会の教会 (Graifrias) のために作られたと考えられています。
しかし、ヘンリー8世 (1491 - 1547) によって、1536年から1541年 の間に修道院解散 (thedissolution of the monasteries)させられたので、旧チャッズ教会に移され、
さらに聖メアリー教会に移されて来たのです。
