嵐が丘/Wuthering Heights

1) ヒースとムアー / Heath / Heather and Moor

『嵐が丘』[初版, 1847, エミリー•ブロンテ (1818 - 1848) 作 / 日本語初版, 1961, 
阿部知二 (1903 - 1973) 訳, 岩波文庫]を読んだことがありませんでした。

何故今になって『嵐が丘』[2003, 鴻巣友季子 (1963 - ) 訳, 新潮社] を読んだかといえば、この夏にヨークシャーへ行く計画がおきて、

「そういえば、『嵐が丘』のロケーション地は、ヨークシャー!
ぜひとも読まなくては！」

と思ったからでした。

いつかは読もうと思っていた本でしたし……。

『嵐が丘』に対する私の事前情報といえば、ブロンテ姉妹のうちの誰かが書いて
ヒースの原野が舞台になっていて、映画化もされている、知名度がある作品という
程度でした。

不思議なことに読みもしなかった"嵐が丘"から、
ヒース、実際はヘザー/heather(erica:エリカ)という植物と
荒野:ムアー(moor)への私の憧れは、きていたように思います。

ヒースは植物でなく、荒野という意味です。

英和辞典(THE WISDOM ENGLISH-JAPANESE DICTIONARY/SANSEIDO2003)では

heatherは植物、heathは荒野と訳されていますが、その同じ辞典でmoorを”(ヒースの茂る) 荒れ地”と訳しています。

英国でもまれにヒースを植物として扱う場合もあるようですし、私達日本人が混同しても仕方のない言葉です。

私はヒースやムアーに対する憧れが強いので説明がくどくなりました。

Heath / Heather and Moor

I hadn't read "Wuthering Heights" [1847, Emily Bronte (1818 - 1848) ] until now. 

I read it at this time because I have a trip planned for Yorkshire this summer. 

I remembered that 'the location of "Wuthering Heights" is there! 

I must read it!'

I did know that one of the Brontë sisters wrote it, and that the main location is on moors with heather. 

The story became movies and it is a very famous classic.

To my surprise, I realized that my admiration for heath (actually the plant is called heather, in general English) 
and moorland, came from "Wuthering Heights", 
and for me, my images of "Wuthering Heights" are heath (heather in normal English) 
and moor, even though I hadn't read the book. 

I had misinterpreted the word heath as being the plant heather.

Apparently Japanese usually do. 

And also occasionally it means plant in Britain. 

So it cannot be helped that sometimes Japanese misunderstand heath as plant. 

For me, heath, heather and moor are important, so I might be explaining about it too much.

2) 名著の秘密 / Secret of the famous book

物語の大筋は、ヒースクリフ(直訳すると’荒れ地の崖’という意味になる)という男性の復讐劇です。

それも二世代に渡る復讐なのです。

読み始めは復讐劇とも知らずにいましたし、ちょっと謎めいた雰囲気があり、おもしろく感じました。

ですが、読み進めるうちに、家族間のいざこざ、恋愛模様が執念深くまたは嫉妬深く描かれ、うんざりしてきてしまいました。

だんだんとホラーとバイオレンスも混じり始め、辟易してしまいました。

長い間、有名で在り続け、名著と言われてきたのに、

何故私はこんなふうに感じてしまうのかしら？　

名著だろうが有名だろうが自分にあわないのだという結論が出せれば疑問にも思いませんが、自分にとって長い間憧れの本であったので、ただあわないのだという結果で、終わらせることができませんでした。

なので、読んでいる途中からこれはこの本に関する批評または分析本を読まなくてはと思いました。

英国へ行くまでに時間もないので、何冊も読むことができないし、
自分にとって多くの時間と労力を費やす必要も感じられなかったので１冊だけにしようと思い、選んで、読んだのが

『嵐が丘の謎を解く』(廣野由美子著/創元社2001)

でした。

私にとってこの本はおもしろかったですし、作品と作者の
エミリーブロンテの背景をさ〜っと読ませてくれました。

時間経過への緻密な計算のもとになりたっている物語だとも知りました。

廣野先生が長らく研究されたことや、参照された『嵐が丘』に関する数えきれない多数の本の存在をもってしても、この本には大きな魅力があるのでしょう。

また松岡正剛 (1944 - ) 先生のWEB: 千夜千冊 ; 
『嵐が丘』[田中西三郎訳版, 講談社文庫, 1978] 
も拝見させていただきました。

有名な本を読んでいない私にとってはありがたいWEBです。

やはりすごい本なんですよね。

歴史的有名作家が褒めている本。

でも私は好きにはなれないです。

やっぱり、’あわない’のでしょうか？

あわないと思いながらも、
この物語の何かしらに魅かれるのか、ロケーション地：Haworthには行ってみたいと思いますし、ブロンテ姉妹が住んだその地をみてみたいと、特にそこのムアーは訪れてみたいと思います。

Wikipediaの中には

ハワースは日本の観光客には非常に人気がある観光地です。
(『嵐が丘』の熱狂的ファンが日本にはいる)"

とあります。

私は熱狂的ファンではありませんが、ハワース(Haworth)は行きたいですね。

Secret of the famous book

The summary of the story is that a man, Heathcliff (it might mean Cliff of heath) wants revenge against a family. 

It had been for two generations. 

I did not know about the revenge theme in the story at the beginning of the book and the story had mystery for me, so I was interested in the book.

However, while I was reading, I realized that there are family troubles, persistent love problems and jealousy which were too much for me. 

I was fed up with the story.

Moreover, it becomes gradually violent and horrific. 

Reading it really bothered me, and I was tired. 

The book was known well and should be great,

why did I feel like this?

It should not matter that a book is famous and supposed to be great, if I decided I do not like it or my taste does not suit it.

However, I have admired the book for a long time, so 
I would not decide it does not suit me simply. 

I would not give up. 

Then while I was reading it, I decided I should read a critic's book about the book.

I do not have enough time for many critic's books before Britain and I would not spend a lot of my time and effort.

Then I selected a book :

"The Anatomy of Wuthering Heights" 
by Yumiko Kono, Sougen Sha 2001.

For me, the book is interesting and I scan for the background about the book and Emily Brontë in the book. 

I understood the book explains the time planning in the story is very careful. 

In addition, Ms. Kono has researched for a long time and her book refers to an enormous number of publications about Wuthering Heights so far, so the book must have appeal to many people.

Furthermore I accessed the WEB site of Seigou Matsuoka; "One thousand nights and one thousand books": ””

The WEB site is useful for me who has not read many famous books.

He tells us that "Wuthering Heights" was praised by a few famous authors, however, I still cannot love it.

I do not feel drawn to it. 

(I haven't read "Ann of Green Gables", because I feel I do not feel drawn to it.) 

I think I do not suit "Wuthering Heights", although I would go to Haworth where the Brontë sisters lived and wrote their books. 

I wonder that I might be fascinated by something in the book.

According to Wikipedia about Haworth,

『Haworth is a very popular destination for Japanese tourists. (Wuthering Heights has a cult following in Japan.)』

I am not a cult follower of it, although I would go Haworth as a part of our Yorkshire trip. 

If I visit there, could I find the secret of the famous book "Wuthering Heights"?
