| ライ / Rye の町と、その周辺を紹介するイラスト集 ライ / Rye は、思ったよりもずっと素敵で、 人気の観光地でした。 ライ / Rye は、古代ローマ時代に重要な港とにされていたと言われています。 今夏の旅行で、わかったのは、英国海峡側の港は、 殆どが古代ローマから存在していて、 経済的にも、攻防面においても重要視されいたということです。 このライ / Ryeもそのひとつです。 Illustration for Book of Rye and its Surroundings Rye is lovely and much more of a tourist town than I thought. They say that Rye was an important port in the Roman period. I learned in our trips this summer that the ports of the English Channel have since the Roman period been of economic value, and used for offence and defence. Rye is one of them. |

1) マスター•ビルダーのVから
From Master Builder, V
今夏、英国の家では、内装の修理がすすでいます。
主にマスター•ビルダー(大工の仕事から、左官、電気工の仕事様々にわたってまかせられる)、Vに頼る修理です。
Vは食べ物と料理が好きで、外国語一般に興味があり、特にスペイン語には熱心です。
娘さんが彼のことを
「私のお父さんは、誰とでも話をする」
と表現するくらいフレンドリー。
彼は'食'だけでなく、様々な文化に興味がある人で、外国人にも壁を作らず、その出会いを楽しでいるのですね。
今よりももっと私の英語が未熟であった時から、彼は私を理解しようとしてくれて、食いしん坊であるという共通点もあり、話が弾みます。
今夏、彼とのおしゃべりで、ちょっと会話力があがったように思います。
彼が、私達のサセックス旅行(Iden周辺)を知って、Ryeの町は、良い散策ができるとアドバイスしてくれました。
実際にIden に行ってみると、Ryeの町はとても近かったのです。
車で5~10分くらいでしょうか？
From Master Builder, V
In this summer, our house in Britain has some repairs.
Mainly we depend on V who is a decorator and builder.
V loves food, cooking and is interested in all foreign languages, particularly Spanish.
He is very friendly, his daughter described him as 'My father talks to anybody'.
I think about him that he is not only interested in food but also other cultures, so he does not make walls and enjoys meeting foreigners.
He has always tried to understand me even when my English was more basic, we love food, so our conversation is lively.
I feel the chatting makes my spoken English improve this summer.
He heard about our trip in Sussex around Iden, he suggested Rye where we could have enjoyable walking.
When we visited Iden, we realized Rye is very close to Rye.
It takes 5 ~ 10 minutes from Iden to Rye by car.

シンク•ポーツ / Cinque Ports の紋章
ライオンは力を、船は港を表しています。
シンク•ポーツとは、12世紀に軍事連合要塞となった町で、
もともとは下記の5つでした。
ニュー•ロムニー/ New Romney,
ハイズ / Hythe,
のちに加えられました。
この事は下記の'The Queen Mother's Garden'でふれています。

'Lions' represent royal power and 'Ships' represent ports.

 町の中で見つけた！ これが何のためのものなのかわかりませんが、 上の紋章がデザインされています。 I found this in the town. I do not know what is for, although its design is the Coat of Arms. |
2) ２日間 / Two Days
ライの目的は散策にあったので、時間をあまり考慮しないですむと思い、
15日には、ベイトマンズ/ Bateman's の後で、
16日には世界で公共鉄道でありつつ世界で一番小さい蒸気機関車が走る
'ロムニー•ハイス＆ディムチャーチ鉄道 / ''ROMNEY, HYTHE & DAYMCHURCH RAILWAYS"
の後で行きました。
もう一日、予定をくんでいたら、Ryeの町に一日、割きたかったです。

Two Days
The purpose of Rye for us was walking which had no closing time,
so our visits were after Bateman's, 15th and 'ROMNEY, HYTHE & DYMCHURCH RAILWAYS" : Smallest Steam Locomotive Public Railway Service in the World, 16th.
If we had another day, I would spend a whole day in Rye.
I shall write about the streets of Rye in next blog.
