1) 入り口 / Entrance

入り口

ウィンブルドンビレッジの西にカニザーロパークがあります。

カニザーロホテルに隣接しているので、最初はプライベートかと思い気が引けますが、公の敷地なので、誰でも入ってゆけます。

入り口からすぐに見えるのはこんな景色 です。

Entrance
Cannizaro Park is to the west of Wimbledon Village. 

It is just next door to the Cannizaro Hotel, so it looks like a private area and you might feel ashamed, although the park is public and everybody can go in and it is free.

The view from the entrance is like this.

注ぎ口が４つ 
『不思議な国のアリス』の世界に入ってゆくような気がします。
それはおかしな形のポットの噴水のせいでしょう。
このポットの噴水もこの場所にあれば、
キッチュなテイストも生きるのかな？

Four Spouts
I felt I could go into "Alice in Wonderland". 
The reason might be the huge teapot shaped fountain. 
The kitsch taste of the pot works well 
as long as it is here, doesn't it?

2) 何故"カニザーロ"？ / Why "Cannizaro"?

私達がこの公園へ到着したのが、午後５時くらい、夕立がきそうで
少し心配しましたが大丈夫でした。

写真の白い館は、カニザーロホテルで、18世紀にグロブナー(男爵) 家によって建てられ、その後王族、高級官僚、裕福な人々に貸し出されました。

その一人がイタリア人のカニザーロ(Cannizzaro) 卿で、今日知られている名前です。

(因に卿の称号はZは２つ)

1947年に館とその敷地はウィンブルドン自治体に売られ、1980年には建物のみ売却、その後ホテルになっています。

庭園や雑木林は公園として維持されています。

Why "Cannizaro"?

When we arrived there at about 5:00pm. 

It looked as though there would be an evening shower, so I was a little bit worried about our walking in the park. 

However, we were alright.

The white mansion in my photographs is the Cannizaro Hotel, which was built in 18th century by the Grosvenor family. 

After then it was rented to tenants of royalty, senior politicians and wealth. 

One of them was the Italian Duke of Cannizzaro, it has been known by this name until now.

In 1947, the house and gardens were sold to Wimbledon Borough Council, and the council sold the house in 1980. 

Subsequently, it has been a hotel. 

The gardens and the woods remain in council ownership and are open to the public.

3) リス / Squirrel

彼らは見かけはかわいいけれど、この国でも鎌倉でも害獣です。

日本全域での彼らへの扱いは知りませ〜ん。

危険を感じるととまって生き物でないふりをします。（笑えます）


Squirrel

They may look lovely, although they are vermin in Britain and Kamakura. 

I do not know about all Japan.

When they feel threatened, they play possum, although we never think they are dead.

この顔つきはいたずら小僧そのまま。

憎めな〜い！

This face is so naughty. 
I cannot dislike him!

4)庭と雑木林 / Gardens and Wood

日本は35度以上の天気が続いていると聞いています。

それに比べるとずっと快適な英国の夏です。

けれども、水不足のため、草木はあまり元気に見えません。

ここは個人の庭ではないので、管理が行き届かないのかもしれません。


Gardens and Wood

I am hearing that Japan reaches over 35℃ every day. 

So this country is much more comfortable, although the plants and trees do not look well, because of lack of rain. 

 And also here is not a private garden, it might not be so well looked after.

周りが元気がないなかで、この花達は比較的元気そう……。
Most plants were not well, although these flowers looked fine.

砂漠とジャングル？
Desert and Jungle?

ヨークシャーデールや湖水地方の奇麗で元気な緑を見て来たので、木々達が疲れているように感じられます。
それでも、森林浴の効果はあって、
私自身はリフレッシュできたように思いました。

I felt the trees were tired, because I had just seen beautiful and 
high-spirited greens in the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. 
However, I thought I could take a therapeutic walk 
in the woods and I did feel refreshed.

こんなものが突然現れるのが不思議です。

一体なんでしょうか？

It is strange suddenly coming across these.
What are they?

柊の実がもう赤くなっているので、驚きました。

Holly tree berries have already become red, and I was so surprised.

このような木々のある公園が近くにあるのは喜ばしいことです。

この地域の自治体がもう少しかわいがってあげるといいのにな〜。

I am pleased the park has a small wood like this, 
and close to R's house (by car).
I hope the local council take more care here.

車で3,4分で、もうこんな景色になります。

It takes a couple minutes by car, then we see a view like this.

都市の夕焼けも、それはそれで奇麗！

ガーデンとゴミ事情/ Garden and Garden rubbish

1) ガーデン/ Garden

Rがようやく庭の手入れを始めました。私は鎌倉の小さな庭の世話をします。ここでは彼の邪魔はしません<笑>

私がいない間にRはたくさんの植木鉢や植木を購入していました。でもみんな、放っておかれてい様子でし、植木鉢の植木は殆ど枯れています……。とりあえず、整理した状態にはなりました。今度は草木のゴミを捨てに行きます。

Finally R started tidying up his garden. I look after my tiny garden in Kamakura, so I do not interrupt him.

While I hadn't been here, he bought many pots and plants. The pots look abandoned, most of the plants in pots are dead ........ Anyway, the garden needs tidying up. Next, we should throw away garden rubbish.

2) ダンプ/ Dump

ウシンブルドンにはダンプ/ Dump と呼ばれる大規模なゴミ捨て場があります。住居の証明書を見せると、無料で毒物以外のゴミはなんでも(大型ゴミでさえも！）捨てることができます。

またリサイクリングセンターという所はガーデンラビッシュが証明書なしで捨てられます。Rの家からはリサイクリングセンターの方が近いのですが、この日はお休みだったので、ダンプへ行きました。

There is a 'Dump' in Wimbledon where, if people show 'residence checker' evidence of being local, they can throw away all kinds of rubbish free.

There is also a 'Recycling Centre' where people throw away garden rubbish without evidence. This is close to R's house, although it was closed on the day, so we went to the Dump.

平日ですがガーデンラビッシュのところには、次から次から人がやって来ていました。リサイクリングセンターがお休みのせいもかるでしょうけれども、英国人が庭の手入れをよくしているからではないでしょうか？でもRは日本人の庭もよく手入れをされていると言います。

私(達)が住む鎌倉の、ご近所の方々がよく手入れをされているので、Rがそう思うのでしょう。

Even though it was a weekday, many people came to the garden rubbish container. I thought because the 'Recycling Centre' was closed, and also British look after garden well. I said to R like that. However, R commented about Japanese gardens that Japanese look after their gardens well too. I (We) live in Kamakura, maybe our neighbours look after their garden very well, so R thinks like that.

虹 / Rainbow

写真では撮影しきれませんでしたが、この虹は半円がはっきり出ていました。

ウィンブルドンでこんなに大きな半円の虹を見たのは初めでです。

ですが、バースで見た虹はもっと素晴らしく、感動も大きかった。それはその虹が近距離に感じられたからだと思います。

Rainbow

I could not catch all the rainbow in my camera. This rainbow was completely semicircular.

It is the first time, I saw a rainbow like this in Wimbledon.

However, I saw a wonderful rainbow in Bath which was even more marvelous than this. I think because I felt Bath's rainbow was close to me.

1) ロールライトストーンズ/ Rollright Stones

A: 伝説 / Legend

ロールライトストーンズというのは、有史以前巨石記念物郡(ストーンヘンジの仲間)で、自然石によって形成されています。

それだけでなく、この周辺には有史以前、以後の遺溝や塚、墓地なども発見されています。

ローリングストーズは主に3カ所、

王の石 / The King Stone

近衛兵 / The King's Men

密談する騎士達 / The Whispering Knights

です。

この場所が私達にはわかりずらく、30分程、周囲を探し回りました。

'パブリックフットパス' (Public Footpath) と'Rollright Stones'の表示を見るたびに止まったり、周囲を探しまわったりしてしまいました。

見つけてしまえば簡単、メイン道路にあり、看板もあり、道路上の
駐車場もあり、何台か車もとまっていました。

❖伝説❖

❖王様と兵士達がコッツオルズ地方を行軍中、魔女に会いました。

魔女は王様に言いました。

『ここから大きな歩幅で７歩先にすすみ、

ロングコンプトンの村が見えたら、

そなたはイングランドの王になるであろう！』

王は円陣を組んで兵士達と相談し、それを試そうと思いました。

王が7歩、歩く間、兵士達は近くで待っていました。

4 (または5) 人の騎士は、少し離れたところで王にそむく相談を
ひそひそとしていました。

王が7歩をすすむ間に地面がもりあがり、村を隠してしまいました。

魔女はからからと高笑いをしながら、

『そなたにはロングコンプトンは見ることができない。

そなたはイングランドの王にはなれないであろう！

そなた達は灰色の石になり立ち続けるだあろう!

我自身はニワトコの樹になるであろう』

そして王様は離れた孤立した所で'王の石'になり、
兵士達は円陣のままストーンサークルになり、
'王の近衛兵'
と呼ばれるようになりました。

魔女はニワトコになる準備をして振り返り、密談をしていた騎士達を見つけ、彼らも石にしてしまいました。

今日、その石は'密談するの騎士達'と呼ばれています❖

というのが、ロールライトストーンズの伝説です。

何故？と疑問に思う所もあるお話ですが、伝説ですから。
(実際は、それぞれのグループの石の構築された時代も違います)

巨石の形、位置だけで、このような話を創り出せる人間は素晴らしいと思います。

Legend

The Rollright Stones are a group of prehistoric megalithic monuments (like Stonehenge) built from large natural stone. 

And also around are burial chamber, barrows, trackway, settlements and others between B.C. 1500 to A.D.300.

The Rollright Stones are three main groups below.

The King Stone

The King's Men

The Whispering Knights

Their locations were difficult for us to find. 

When we looked for them, we often looked at signs of 'Public Footpath' and 'Rollright Stones and we stopped there. 

We drove around there for about half hour. 

After finding them, we realized the site is along a main road, the sign beside the road, a lay-by on the road and some cars were there before us. 

It should have been easy to find, silly us!

❖Legend❖

❖A King and his army were marching over the Cotswolds when they met a witch, who said to the King,

'Seven Long strides you shall take, and

If Long Compton can see

King of England shall you be'

His troops made a circle to discuss the challenge and he decided to take it up. 

The King strode forward, although on his seventh stride the ground rose up in a long mound. He could not see it. 

The witch cackled and said,

'You can see Long Compton,

You shall not be King of England

Everybody shall be hoar stones

I shall be elder tree!' 

The king became the solitary 'King Stone,' and his armies became formed a stone circle, called 'King's Men'. 

As the witch prepared to turn into an elder tree and found four (or five) Knights. 

She turned them to stone too, and today they are called 'Whispering Knights'❖

This is the stone's legend. 

You ( We?) might wonder why the story is so strange, although it is a legend, alright! 

(In fact, each group of stones were erected at different times)

I think that humans are wonderful creating a story like that just from the form and the places of megalithic monuments.

巨石遺跡に鉄柵がある事が珍しく、ちょっとびっくりしました。

19世紀に、ここの石の破片をお守りにする風習があり人々が削ってしまったので、できた柵であると、
後になって知りました。

幸いにもその風習は終わったそうです。

そういう風習は人々としては攻撃的な気持ちはなく、
素朴な行為であると思います。

似たような事はどこにでもあり、いつの時代でもおこりますね。

It is unusual to see an iron railing around megalithic monuments, 
so I was a little surprised. 

Later, I knew that the destructive habit of 19th century, people chipped off small pieces to act as lucky charms and keep the Devil at bay. 

So the railing was built around them. 

Fortunately the habit was stopped. 

I think people do not have ill will and are just artless in habits like that, and these things happen everywhere, and in every period.

C: 偉大なる長老達と子供達 
     Great Elders and Children

'偉大な長老達'というのは、私が勝手に名付けました。
'the Great Elders' is the name I have given to the stones in the Circle.

近衛兵

ロールライトストーンズの中で一番有名です。

BC 2000~2500 構築、直径約30m、英国では最も東に
位置しているストーンサークルです。

現在、約70個余りの石があると言われていますが、石を数えるたびに数が違うので正確な数字を知るのは不可能だと言われています。

このストーンサークルの伝説に

❖夜中になると、王と近衛兵はもとの姿にもどり、
   手を繋いで踊ります。
   彼らの喜びの踊りを観た人は石になるか、
   狂人になるか、死んでしまいます❖

というのもあります。

私は、これは夜に石を削ったり、運び去ったりする人達へむけての
警告に思われます。

元来は、狭い門にあたる部分をのぞいて、150個の石が平均的に並べ立てられていました。

パンフレットに、

'いくつかの石には400~800年の苔が成長しているのが見られます'

と説明されていますが、私にはどの苔が古くてどの苔が新しいのか
見分けはつきませんでした。

このストーンサークルは黄色のペンキをかけられたことがあったそうです。

この行為は前述の風習とは違い、悪意が感じられます。

ですが、多くある事ではないしょう。

ここには鉄柵はありません。

私は人々を信じる姿勢が英国にはあるのね〜
と思います。

幸運なことに、黄色のペンキをかけて嬉しがる人々よりは、良心をもってここを訪れる人が今までは多い結果となっています。

ピクニックに3組ほどの家族が来ていました。

こういう場所をピクニックの場として選ぶ英国人の感覚は日本人と
違うな〜と思います。

というか、羨ましい……。

こどもたちは紀元前から存在している石と遊んでいます。

石は彼らにとってはブランコやジャングルジムと同じようなものなのでしょう。

やっぱり、羨ましい……、
私は石達に畏敬の気持ちがあり、彼らのような素直な気持ちで'偉大な長老達'に接することはもうできませんから……。

子供達は'偉大な長老達'から力をもらい、彼らも子供達からまた違った力をもらっているのではないかとも思います。

The most famous of the 'Rollright Stones' are in a 30m diameter circle, the easternmost stone circle in Britain.

Today, there are about seventy-something stones. 

They say it is uncountable, because a different tally results each time an attempt is made. 

One of the legends has it that

❖At midnight, the stones come alive and return the king and his armies back to flesh and bone and they dance. 

Anyone who looks at their dancing, either turns to stone or goes mad or dies❖

I think that it is a warning to people who might try to chip off some stone or damage them.

Originally the circle had about 105 stones forming a continuous wall except for a narrow entrance.

According to the Brochure,

'Some of the lichens growing on the stones are thought to be 400-800 years old '

However, I did not decide which was old or new.

Once 'The King's Men' were attacked with yellow paint. 

The act was not the aforementioned habit and I feel it was out of malice. 

However, it is not so often, is it? 

Here, they still do not have any railings. 

I thought they have trust in people in Britain. 

Fortunately there are far more visitors with their (our) consciences than attackers like those who enjoyed using yellow paint.

There were about three families having their picnics. 

I think people can choose historical places like that for a picnic which is quite different from Japanese people and I envy the British.

The children could play on the prehistoric stones. 

I think the stones are similar to swings or climbing frames for them. 

I envy them again, because I hold the stones in awe and I could not come into contact with 'the Great Elders' like the children who have pure minds. 

And also I think the children might be given some power from 'the Great Elders' and 'the Great Elders' might be given some different power from the children.

私は、最初にタイトルの英語を 'ささやく騎士達'と理解し、ロマンチックな名前と思い、いかにも伝説が生まれてきそうな感じがしました。

ですが、その後伝説としては王にそむく相談をしている騎士達という設定でついた名前だと知り、甘い気分は消えました。

王にそむくというのは、私は王を暗殺することだと思います。

それで、'密談する騎士達'と翻訳しましたが、
'ささやく'という方が、より怪しげでしょうか？

Firstly I translated the title : 'The Whispering Knights' from English to Japanese myself, and I felt what a romantic title and the sound surely makes a legend. 

Now I knew the reason for the name came from the legend in which the Knights talked about letting the king down (I thought they would assassinate him),

then my mind was changed. 

After then I translated it in Japanese in my blog, as 'Knights Holding Secret Talks.' 

However, I wonder maybe the sound of 'Whispering' is more dubious, isn't is?

倒れている石を含めると５つになります。

これは４つの石の上に乗っていた石が落ちたのだ
と言われています。

伝説でも４(人)とあったり、５(人)とあったりするのは
この状況のためです。

The Whispering Knights

If you count this group, including the stone lying down, 
there are five. 

They say the fifth was on top of the other stones. 

Therefore the legends sometimes say, four or five Knights.

After the 'Rollright Stones', we continued to London. 

Our trip was nearly finished. I felt a little bit sad.

We popped in a town for a rest, by chance it was Chipping Norton on the edge of the Cotswolds.

B: 古本屋 / Secondhand Bookshop

古本屋 
Rが古本屋やリサイクルショップが好きで、
初めての町ではだいたいこれらの店に寄ります。
私はこのお店が好きです。

R loves charity shops and secondhand bookshops, so we always go to them, when we visit a new town. 

In this town, we went into a secondhand bookshop, 'Kellow Books'. 

I like this shop.

感じたのは何故かしら？

ここの本はみんなきれいで、店内も整理されています。

店主さんが日本の本を置いていると教えてくれ、指差したさきに棚とガラスースがあり、日本の本が１冊ずつありました。

           (ウォリックからの帰り道で、この名前にあうなんて、

オーナーさんには価格は聞きませんでしたが、あるWEB (2007年) で¥145,000! でした。(私には高い！)

出版年はわかりません。

ぶんぶく茶釜、浦島太郎 等、30話所収のハードカバーの豪華本です。

'Green Willow'は、"Kwaidan" 
(『怪談』1904 ; ラフカディオハーン / Lafcadio Hearn / 小泉八雲: 1850-1904) 
の本に収集してある話です。

私はグレース・ジェームズは"Kwaidan"で、このお話をみつけたのだと思います。

'Green Willow'『青柳のはなし』は、柳の精霊と若武者の悲しい恋愛のお話で、こわくはありません。

彼の『怪談』は "情緒豊かな文学作品" (ウィキペディア: "怪談")とのことで、私が抱くこの本ヘの恐怖のイメージは、後の映画やTV番組などからの影響が強いのかもしれません。

怪談という言葉が持つこわさもありますね。

小泉八雲は日本が好きで、日本の良い所ばかり、それもかつての日本の良い所を書いた人のようです。

彼が書いた本、彼に関する本を含め、約100くらいはあるようですが、私は殆ど読んでいません。

幼い頃に"耳なし芳一"や"雪女"などを読んだくらいです。

英国で、小泉八雲の本 (お話) に会うとは思ってもみませんでした。

美しいお話です。

日本のお話は繊細で美しい……、
これは日本文化にもいえることですね。

It has 30 stories including 'Green Willow'. 

It is a gorgeous hardback.

I did not ask the owner for the cost, later I researched in the Internet, a Japanese website shows the cost ¥145,000 ! in 2007. 

 Expensive! (for me)

Green Willow' is in "Kwaidan"(1904, Lafcadio Hearn).

I think Grace James found the story from this book.

Kwaidan, usually we say Kaidan in Japanese, it means ghost or supernatural stories. 

Basically they are scary and spooky, so usually I do not fancy reading them.

Although 'Green Willow' is not like that, it is a sad love story about a young Samurai and a willow spirit.

Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904), also known as 
Yakumo Koizumi, 
is still a famous author in Japan. 

He is well-known for his collections of Japanese legends and ghost stories. 

He loved Japan and he became a Japanese citizen. 

He wrote mainly about many good aspects of Japanese culture, people and tales including ghost tales. 

 Apparently there are about one hundred Japanese books about him and his books.

I did not read all of them, I just read some of them when 
I was a child.

I did not expect to come across any of his story books in this country. 

The story is beautiful. 

Most Japanese stories are beautiful and delicate........
I can say Japanese culture is like this, can't I?

I came across Rafe Martin in the website above. 

His picture books were published in Japan showing him as the author. 

Today the books are out of print.

トールキンはたくさん言葉を創作しているから、
私には難しすぎるかもしれません。

大鷲、ロールライトストーンズのような石または岩？、
ヨークシャーデールのような風景、トールキンのマークなどがある裏表紙が、
とても嬉しい！

良い思い出として記念の本です。

I bought a book : "The Children of Húrin" (2007) in this shop.

It was published after J.R.R.Tolkien passed away. 

Tolkien's son : Christopher John Reuel Tolkien (1924~) tidied up many memorandums of his father and edited them into this book.

Illustrator : Alan Lee.

Publisher : Harper Collins

I wonder how much I would understand of the book, because my English is perhaps not good enough for it. 

Tolkien created many words, so it is even more difficult for me.

The back cover has a painting of giant eagles, many rocks like the Rolllight Stones, the view is like the Yorkshire Dales and Tolkien's mark, so I am very pleased. 

It is a good souvenir for this trip, even though I haven't read it.
