Asagao : Morning Glory and Japanese Culture, 4th of August

Asagao : Morning Glory

Market of Asagao : Morning Glory
    in Kamakura-gu

Market of Asagao : Morning Glory in Kamakura-gu

There was a Market of Asagao: Morning Glory :Ipomoea nil in Kamakura-gu.

I went to there in the late afternoon, so the flowers had wilted.

I did not take any close-up  photograph of Asagao.

When I was a primary school child, I had a homework which was making an observation dairy of Asagao.

I think it was common in Japan.

However, I had a delightful surprise when I found out that even now children have this homework.

If when people are children and they get close to Asagao more than other plants, even when we become adults we still feel an extra affinity for this flower, don't we?

I think Japanese people love Asagao, or have a sense of affinity, more than people in other countries.

I wonder if other countries have Asagao observation dairies???

Princess Asagao
The Tale of Genji is a classic of Japanese literature, consisting of 54 chapters (stories), and was wrriten by
Murasaki Shikibu in the Heian period (794-1185).

Asagao is the name of princess and title of Chapter 20 of The Tale of Genji.

The playboy Heian, Hikaru Genji is the main character, and the stories are about his love romances.
Even though he is a playboy, the writing is not negative about him.
I guess many Japanese love the tales and Hikaru Genji, so
The Tale of Genji became a few films, dramas and Manga, one of them was 'Asaki Yumemishi.'

Only Princess Asagao does not look like giving her heart to
Hikaru Genji when he tries to make advances to her.
In fact, she loves him.

I found this information from my resent research about Princess Asagao. (laugh)

I extracted some sentences from Chapter 20 : Asagao, although they are only in Japanese.

I do not have enough will-power to translate them, Sorry!

Please you find the edited English translation of The Tale of Genji,
for example by Amazon.
After this research in Internet, I feel HIkaru Genji's love is art.
Well, maybe Murasaki Shikibu's novel or writing is art.

     Hikarugenji ~ Yoshitsune Minamoto

Ushiwakamaru
At this time, when boys became Samurai, they were given new adult name.

Ushiwakamaru :  Yoshitsune was his childhood name.

The Tale of Genji ~ Yoshitsune Minamoto
Kencho Suematsu(1855-1920) was a journalist and politician in Meiji and Taisho period.

His wife was the oldest daughter of Hirobumi Ito who was  a four-time Prime Minister of Japan (the 1st, 5th, 7th and 10th) and ¥1,000 Japanese note shows his portrait.

He went to London as a diplomat, and graduated from Cambridge (St. John's College, Cambridge) in 1884.

He was the frist person to translate "The Tale of Genji" from Japanese  to English.

Also he wrote an essay showing a theory about  'Minamoto no Yoshitsune' and 'Genghis Khan' in English and publicised it in Britain.
(Nowadays the theory is treated a myth.)

Through Mr. Kencho, Yoshitsune was related to Hikaru Genji

Often Yoshitsune has been depicted having been  as handsome as Hikaru Genji.

Yoshitsune  was the younger brother of  Minamoto no Yoritomo who established the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate of Japan.

Yoshitsune  is a tragic historical hero.

Apparently Yoshitsune is more popular in Japan, or more people like Yoshitsune than Yoritomo, because many Japanese children read the story of Benkei and Ushiwakamaru , and Japanese tend to support the underdog.

If you want to know more about it, please research yourself.

Houzuki : Japanese lantern : Chinese lantern: Physalis alkekengi were displayed, although the market name was Asagao Market.

A long time ago, my friend N gave me an artist Houzuki work.

The work was box holding 8 Houzuki 'lantern', with tiny light in each.

I remember I was impressed that the artist delivered it himself.

After sunset, I often switched the lights on and the light coming through the Houzuki was bright warm colour and they were very beautiful.

I heard the artist was awarded a government grant, and he went abroad to study in Italy.

I do not know where he is now.

After I returned to Japan from Britain in 2009, the colour of the Houzuki was worn out.

I was a little depressed.

I think works with plants have a short life span, don't they?

Except for pressed flowers and dried flowers, but still they might fade.
Maybe I would buy it, if it were ¥800.
It was ¥1,500, it was too expensive for me.

Flowers in Nikaido After Rain Shower

In Nikaido, Uguisu : Japanese Bush Warbler sings in the morning and through cloudy days.

Higurashi: Tanna japonensis sings in the evening and on cloudy days.

Semi : Cicadas sing in the day time, on sunny days and cloudy days.

After rain shower, these flowers looked cheerful and
I took photographs of them.
Could I ask your name?
Never mind that, you are just beautiful....

I am 'Gloriosa': Glory Lily, Flame Lily.

Lagerstroemia india / Crape myrtle

Nerium

This is considered a poisonous plant,
so you need to be a little bit careful.
Insects avoid them.
