First time in the seat

First time in the seat

I retured to Kamakura Station. from Kitakamakura Station.

Then I went to Kamakura library.

Always 5 individual seats were reserved by somebody,
although today I found one seat.

Yay!

It was the first time I used it.
The legs of the desk and the chair have tennis balls.
I guess they protect the floor and are for soundproofing.

Fumie Kondo's Books

Here, I will write about cycle road races from my feelings and the views of just these three books.

In other words,  my writing is from the position of  "Pretending to know".

If you work in this area and read this blog, you might have uncomfortable feelings, I am sorry.

I love the three books.
I had nearly finished reading "SURVIVE", so I sat down on the seat.

"sacrifice"
I had borrowed Fumie Kondo's three books.

They are a series about cycle road races.

It was the first time I had read this author's work, so I do not know her other works.

"sacrifice"(Shincho-sha/ 2007) is a mystery, however, I am attracted to the representation of road races rather than being interested in the mystery, and I became interested in road races.

I knew that cycle road races look like individual competitions, in fact they are team ones.

I felt it is similar to F1 racing.

It is different from F1 in that cyclists have the wind in their face or bodies, so the lead is changing in races which is one of the customs.

Another one is that they help each other, even though they are in different teams.

The book says 'This is a Gentlemen's Sport'.

The main character, Chikau Shiraishi who is new to professional road racing and cycles as an assistant (they say assist) for his team in this book.

The story is about strategies of races and depicts the fabric of human relationships, although the novel did not leave me with labyrinthian impressions.

Although the author hasn't directly watched and taken part in a road race, she still wrote this.

Therefore she did not know the dark side of racing, so my impression from the story is not uncomfortable.

Moreover, Chikau Shiraishi is not a devious personality, so there might be a touch of his freshness through the story.

I have a favorable impression so I decided I would read the whole series : "EDEN" and "SURVIVE".

According to the postscript of the paperback "sacrifice" (Shincho-sha / 2010) by Hiroko Oya,
'this book was introduced by an on-the spot commentator of the 2008 Tour de France broadcast in Japan

The book was popular in the Japanese cycling world'.

I borrowed the paperback earlier than the hard cover one (2007).

When I borrowed "EDEN" and "SURVIVE", I would see all the hard cover edtions (three books : above photographs).

Complicated World

"EDEN" and "SURVIVE" are not mysteries, although I do not care.

The main setting of "EDEN" is in the Tour de France, the main character is the same.

He has really typical Japanese thoughts ; self-sacrifice, self-review, and equality with others. He knows he is really Japanese himself.

Self-assertion is often highly esteemed in Western people who cannot understand Japanese thoughts like these.

"SURVIVE" is a few short stories which consist of a few previous characters's points of view.

For me, it is supplementary biography.

The author wrote again that road racing is called a Gentlemen's Sport.

However, she wrote about doping and cyclists's dark-side or views not from gentlemanly angles.

After reading, I feel a road race is like a war of promotion or surviving war in a society.

It is not just about speed, but also it is about cooperation with the periphery, sometimes he combines forces even his enemy and yet  when the time comes he can break the combination easily, after which he has got a win.

The two books have more of a dark-side than the first book, although they do not leave me with uncomfortable feelings.

However, I had sad feelings by the end of the third book.

The sadness made my head drop, however, when I reflect on the stories again, my head can come up again and I can move forward would.

   Ace, Team Leader's Character

 Ace, Team Leader's Character

After reading three books, I feel the author is not good at writing about the characters of  team leaders.

In road races, assist cyclists work for a win of their team ace, sometimes they become victims.

The ace cyclist personality must not have a sense of guilt about the assists.

However, the author wrote about a Japanese ace cyclist who felt obliged to feel the hopes of his assists and another one whose personality pays attention to others.

They do not appear like tyrants who desire a win by all means and who do not think that the win has been achieved by him and his assists.

The author explained there are tyrant types, although she did (can) not describe them accurately.

I guess she does not like the type and also the type does not fit into Japanese aesthetics.

Coincidentally,  when I thought that, my friend S recommended me to read
"It's Not About the Bike"
(Japanese Edition / Koudan-sha / 2010) (Left of below Photograph
(English Edition / 2000)

In this book, there is an exact tyrant type, the personality never has a sense of sin which  Kondo could not write about.

He is Lance Armstrong and a real person.

I think this book and Kondo's books are different like Speed Skating Races and Figure Skating Competitions in skating worlds.

Yellow Book

A. 題名 /  Title

原題の『It's Not About the Bike』よりも、文学的に思えます。

『It's Not About the Bike』

This Picture came from Wikipedia.

Title

(Lance Armstrong with Sally Jenkins / English Edition / 2000)

"Tada Maillot Jaune no Tamedenaku : It's Not Only Maillot Jaune"
(Japanese Edition / Koudan-sha / 2010)

I think Japanese title is more literary than the original title.

"It's Not About the Bike" somehow sounds really American, doesn't it?

B.  この本 / This Book

This Book

He is an American former professional road racing cyclist. He wrote this book with a sports writer, Sally Jenkins.

This book is a report about his fight against cancer.

The book describes his fortitude which exemplifies American ideal thought
'YOU CAN DO IT!'

His attitude against cancer gives hope for cancer patients.

The description of a leading road racing cyclist encourages other patients, which only he could do.

Even though the book is the record of his fight against cancer, in the end he is not dead,  but alive and recovering.

In fact, he does much better than just staying alive.

Therefore the book is very encouraging for other patients  and their families.

Above comments are every reader's thoughts,  aren't they?

In America, it became recommended reading for high school students.

I thought those around him seemed like assists in a road race.

I think he was an ace in private life, too.

In the end he has been a winner in his fight with cancer.

Doping

Even now, there is no solution about the suspicion of his doping, he will have said NO!, or he must say NO!, until his death.

If it becomes very clear that he did use doping, who would want to take away his great achievements and his gorgeous titles?

At least I hope the matter remains unsettled, then his great career can stay in history for cancer patients.

Even if it was his intention, still I think, let's leave it.

Just one thing, I think cyclists without doping who took part in the races and competed with him,  would not be able to forgive him.

I have like this jersey which was made in England.

I bought it more than 10 years ago.
I think it was designed by a designer who knew of Maillot Jaune.

Decoration The Festival of the Weaver

I got a bus in front of Kamakura station on my way home.

I was surprised to see the decorations for  the Star Festival ; Tanabata (7th July) already  hanging on the gate : Torii on Komachi street.
